For the first time ever—French drugmaker Sanofi helps a rival—agrees to produce >125 million doses of BioNTech and Pfizer's #COVID19 vaccine for the EU. It will lend its production facilities in a highly unusual collaboration.
2) The French drugmaker will give BioNTech access to a production facility in Frankfurt, which will start to deliver doses this summer, Sanofi said in a statement Wednesday. Sanofi also did this because their own vaccine hit snafu and won’t be ready anytime soon.
3) Let this sink - France is home to the famed Louis Pasteur institute - what @spignal calls the “spiritual home” of vaccines.
Lots of wounded French 🇫🇷 egos for sure, but glad they were big enough to do this and help the world.
4) Famed french @TheEconomist journalist @spignal goes further — the French think is “seen as symbol of France 🇫🇷 losing ground in global race for knowledge/science”
And he points out many in France had said there’s “no chance of a vaccine within a year, likely 4 years”.
5) French egos aside, why isn’t more pharma companies doing this to collaborate? Why can we just share resources to combat pandemic.
If there is an asteroid ☄️ coming to hit 🌍, we would collaborate. Why can’t we do this for #COVID19 vaccine production?
6) Before we clap for @sanofi too much... they also just fired 400 research scientists.
7) That said, I admire the graciousness of @sanofi to make another drug maker’s vaccine. But please hire back the 400 researchers you fired @sanofipasteur.

On Walgreen’s sucky website, you have to pick an exact Walgreens (and only one at a time), and then pick exact date (only that date) and then a time window (only that window!!!)—ugly.
3) And if searching different SPECIFIC time window or date or store, you have to start all over again on Walgreens—most cumbersome site ever! if you’re not tech savvy, forget it!
Also, what if you want to check last minute openings & want to quick check for new slots?! Tough...
2) SURPRISING—“Participants were infected with the variant even after they had already had Covid.” This aligns with what South Africa CDC warned last week
3) “we are the first to conduct an efficacy trial — in the face of a changing virus,” said Stanley Erck, CEO of Novavax. He said that researchers expected variants could change the trial results, but “the amount of change has been a bit of a surprise to everyone.”
BREAKING—First two community transmission cases of the worrisome #SARSCoV2 strain #B1351 first seen in South Africa 🇿🇦 have been detected in South Carolina. No travel history in either cases. #B1352 is the one seen to evade antibodies. #COVID19 cnn.com/2021/01/28/hea…
2) The variant -- also known as B.1.351 -- has raised concerns over being more transmissible than other versions of the virus, and potentially evading the immune protection offered by antibodies. Experts say they believe vaccines will still be effective against the variant.
3) "The arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 variant in our state is an important reminder to all South Carolinians that the fight against this deadly virus is far from over," Dr. Brannon Traxler, the health department's interim public health director, said in a statement Thursday.
My god—frontline immigrant healthcare workers in hospitals in U.K. who don’t have an NHS health number are being DENIED #COVID19 vaccines by 🇬🇧 government. They treat COVID patients daily!!!
Boris Johnson is like the Donald Trump of the U.K.
Does neuroinvasion of the brain by #SARSCoV2 happen? Not just in mice, but in *humans*? The clear answer in this study is yes — both demonstrated with human brain cells and brain 🧠 inspection of deceased #COVID19 patients. 🧵 from a peer reviewed paper. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
2) Let’s first read the abstract:
📌”using human brain organoids... clear evidence of infection”
📌”neuroinvasion can be blocked”
📌”in autopsies of patients who died of COVID19... we detect #SARSCoV2 in neurons”
📌”results suggest that neurological symptoms associated with COVID-19 may be related to consequences of direct viral invasion of the central nervous system”
📌”brain is a site for high replicative potential for SARS-CoV-2.”
3) Denmark 🇩🇰 CDC has modeled this as well... and it’s horrendous. Denmark sequences EVERY SINGLE CASE EACH WEEK for mutations and they know it’s increasing 70% per week!!! Earlier modeling:
