Melatonin also known as the “sleep hormone” is a particular hormone which is produced naturally in the body to help us sleep. It regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Some people have insomnia due to a deficiency in this hormone.

Melatonin also exist as a dietary supplement which is used for short-term treatment of insomnia.
It helps you fall asleep faster and decreases the time you awaken during the night thereby helping you to sleep for a long time.
The common and unserious side effects of this drug include:

Dizziness,headache and nausea.

Less common, some people experience abdominal cramps which stops with time.

Certain people are allergic to this drug and react to it.
This drug is not to be used by people who are diabetic, with liver disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy or depression. This is not the complete list. Make sure to consult your healthcare provider before using this medication.
Worthy of note, taking alcohol will increase the effects as well as the side effects of this drug, so it is not advised. And also, you are not to use machinery once you take this drug.
Report to your healthcare provider if you notice any serious side effect while using this medication.
