Professor Racaniello says “we do gain of function studies all the time. We don’t make a big deal of it, we don’t write letters telling the world that we’re going to do them because that’s not the way science works. Science works by just doing your experiments.”
Professor Racaniello seems to infer that it is acceptable for scientists to manipulate viruses, e.g. make a “virus drug resistant…to see if a drug resistant mutant would have any properties that would make it scarier in people” without telling “the world about it”
Virologists plan influenza H7N9 gain of function experiments. Published on virology blog, 7 August 2013: virology.ws/2013/08/07/vir…
It is most concerning that there is an arrogant attitude about this type of research in the scientific community, perhaps exemplified most tellingly in the comments of Vincent Racaniello, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Columbia University.

Racaniello and Daszak go back a long way
“The opening of a Chinese BSL4 [laboratory] is another step in the excellent growth of the country’s research base,” said Vincent Racaniello back in 2017 sixthtone.com/news/1000921/i…
Is he thick or what?
“People who are saying it escaped from a lab have no idea what they're talking about,”

"The first scientist to question the discovery was Vincent Racaniello, He said the fragment might have come from a mixed virus with pieces of the MERS virus in it, or even from something the bat ate." nytimes.com/2013/08/28/hea…
@PLOSPathogens seems to have a problem with integrity
Racaniello has served on the editorial boards of scientific journals, including the Journal of Virology and is a community editor for the open access journal PLOS Pathogens en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_R… @sai_suryan@USRightToKnow
Racaniello seems confused
"When the scientists in Wuhan discovered this similarity, they only had a small piece of the virus sequence- so they had to go back to the cave, get some more samples, and sequence the virus"
or does he know more than us?

We? I know he is friendly with Daszak, but that friendly?
