I wanted SO BADLY to do a supported coding class last year and then Covid happened. This next session is about creating a remote coding club for kids with autism and I am SO excited for it!! #atia2021

Andre will focus on block and scratch, which is totally my level, huzzah! The club started face to face last year and then came Covid, so they took it virtual. #atia2021

Teacher as lead learner, not expert. I love this approach. Low floor: How accessible and easy is something to learn? High ceiling: can you grow? Wide walls: how engaging is it? #atia2021

Program came from grant focus on socializing, so that was the primary goal. Build confidence and advocacy, and collaborate. Share that you want to play Minecraft instead! #atia2021

Debugging is part of this: problem solving when code doesn’t work. #atia2021

These four areas were key to success. Start with day of exploration on their own. Then next time, they try to copy your code. Then try to find single solution to problem with that one answer, then questions w/multiple possibilities. Include instructions in mult formats #atia2021

Ages 6-10, new and beginner coders, readers and non readers. Unplugged and plugged stations. #atia2021

Smaller groups virtually, self paced and collaborative work. Older kids, 8-14. Still beginners but through proficient coders. All in same space, but doing own work. More parallel play. #atia2021

Set kids up for success! Meet and greet, camp tour of website with games and links and tutorials. #atia2021

Finding Nemo coding game on jam board. I really need to learn about jam board. This is so cool!! Audio directions matched with watching him move robot manually following the selected coding on screen. #atia2021

Wonders-neighborhood is a irtuamplatform for coding, same company that did dash robot. Self paced environment for coding a virtual robot. One girl did a coding story. Narrated what her robot did and how they did it. This is so cool. #atia2021

Here’s the robot and hundreds of code options—move, change lights, etc. drag and drop, watch the robot go. #atia2021

Text to speech tool is built in for helping fix errors and give directions. #atia2021

Ha! I never meet other Shelleys. And she has fantastic glasses and Star Wars dolls. Perfect. #atia2021

Pre and post metrics. Kids engaged from day one and it only got better from there. #atia2021

Debug together—collaborate with kids to solve problems. Get creative with supports—use bodies, take breaks, use passions, use text to speech, etc. use ice age, Minecraft, flappy bird. Code art and music. Choice is everything. Give kids place to be own teachers. #atia2021

Botley: set up visual tiles and then punch into its remote. Can do fun things but maybe younger elementary. Inexpensive! $35! Dash is great for older kids—lots of apps, use your voice, kind of like RC cars. About $100. Great resources. #atia2021

Jam board Finding Nemo: use sticky notes and imported pics (arrows, Nemo, etc). Hide items behind sticky notes. Students can make their own, too. Pretty easy to use. #atia2021
