Post production captions can take four times as long to do as the length of the video. Yes, that’s definitely our experience! I have a par timer who does this for our vids and it’s most of what she does. #atia2021

Wow. Hit multiple keys at once to create “beautiful words” in real time. Create personalized database of common words. Voice Writing is used in courtrooms and military. This is very interesting. Europe uses it a lot too, under a different name. This is fascinating. #atia2021

Instead of repeating voice writing a dozen times in an hour, tell computer “when I say Vork, write out voice writing.” Use database of sounds to make it go quickly. #atia2021

Captioners need to know speakers, topics, words that will be used often, etc—create that database. Slides with text. Captioners need to do their homework and learn about what will be said, and even how speakers speak. such good background to what goes into this work #atia2021

TV captions can come from other states—she lives in AZ and captioned for news channels in far away states. She doesn’t get visuals on the screen, and some still send captions over telephone lines! Errors can be caused at any stage. #atia2021

In a 30 minute broadcast, 98.5% accuracy means 2-3 errors per minute. It’s high accuracy but not good enough. Maybe okay if you can hear enough, but not if you rely on them. Standards should be better. #atia2021

Now I know I can complain when captions cover In Memoriam names every award show, too. I feel more powerful already. Everyone who has captions on needs to take action when they are subpar captioning. #atia2021
