many have asked what more they can do for the #farmersprotest. we’ve been told by human rights orgs that raising awareness on social media is most effective in this situation. it is pertinent that we keep bringing international attention to this!!!!!
posting on socials may feel small but it IS action. doesn’t matter if you have 10 followers or 10,000- EVERY voice makes a difference. don't diminish the power of awareness. speak loudly and proudly my friends. ✊🏽 we’re on the right side of history.
let’s also keep focused: modi’s 3 farm bills will corporatize agriculture and millions will lose their livelihoods. months ago punjabis marched to delhi in what has now become the largest protest in the world. across india ppl organized the biggest strike in human history.
farmers and farm workers from across diff states, religions, and backgrounds have joined. protesters say they refuse to be taken over by an authoritarian regime and the regime’s billionaire friends.
in response th govt has banned th internet. beaten & tortured protesters. barricaded protest sites w/ cement & spikes. journalists are being illegally detained + charged. peaceful women activists like #NodeepKaur r illegally held w/o bail & sexually assaulted in police custody.
police are allowing bjp goons to throw petrol bombs at protesters. hundreds have gone missing. indian government’s propaganda machine is using bollywood and national media to malign the movement.
internationally: press advocacy orgs. human rights orgs. and int’l labour groups have all spoken up and begun to call out the indian govt’s actions against protesters.
the farmers protest is a climate justice movement. climate activists are supporting farmers who've long demanded reform of green revolution practices that have resulted in a depleted water table & high cancer rates. corporatization & contract farming will further destroy ecology.
farmers call for crop diversification & environmentally friendly agricultural practices. one of the first pieces i wrote was 'the cancer train' (2011) inspired by industrial farming practices which led to extreme cancer rates in punjab.
we need REFORM- not a red carpet rolled out for billionaires. #stopadani
it's vastly important that the international community keep raising their voice.

ours is a fight against crony capitalism. against human rights abuses. for truth. a fight for democracy. we r not afraid to be maligned by this fascist regime. we stand with the #farmersprotest

farmers and farm workers started the most powerful revolution to ever challenge modi’s fascist government. our people started protesting in punjab as early as july 2020. they marched to delhi november 27 and have been sleeping on the streets since. #farmersprotest

our people singing songs of freedom. our people feeding the masses. our people dying. activists abducted. journalists kidnapped. they try to divide us and defame our heroes. our sister #NodeepKaur is being tortured and sexually assaulted by indian police.

on january 12—haryana police abducted nodeep kaur from her tent at singhu protest. since then she has been beaten & sexually assaulted while under police custody.

nodeep is 23 yold punjabi dalit woman & trade union activist who has been bravely speaking up about the protests.
“we come from a village to earn, we are dalit, we are women. i am a student. there is a class difference, even the police attack a labourer like tyrants. there is a class issue.”

- nodeep’s sister rajveer kaur

sabrangindia.in/article/why-wa…
nodeep’s case is emblematic of both the treatment of dalit activists and the custodial violence that’s taken place against punjabi women by indian security forces ranging from the 1980s to now.

india commonly uses police abduction to silence activism and protest.

my friends: i've spoken to protestors on the ground & they ask us to keep amplifying their voices:
1. they require human rights orgs like @penamerica to look into abuses against journalists. @CPJAsia is are already on it

#MandeepPunia #DharmenderSingh #farmersprotest
2. continue putting pressure on international media to do their job thoroughly. editorial boards at @washingtonpost @nytimes remain silent as the indian gov’t cracks down on journalists and peaceful protestors with torture and violence. modi’s fascist government must be exposed
3. we will not tolerate the attempted censorship of journalists. when press freedom is attacked- democracy dies. for every journalist that’s being tortured beat and illegally arrested we will rise up in their place.

indian police are kidnapping journalists. we’re incredibly worried about the safety of reporters incld. many citizen-journalists on the ground.

attn: @pressfreedom

@Twitter @TwitterSupport @misskaul stop suspending the accounts of journalists because of government pressure!
#ReleaseMandeepPunia !!! everyone amplify.

this is why it’s imperative for @twitter to stop the silencing of reporting and activists on the ground. without their work these atrocities would be happening without anyone knowing.
