This is another one of those harsh realities mainstream Canadians prefer to rationalize away. You personally aren’t racist. You personally haven’t experienced racial hatred. So it’s difficult to empathize with those who have.
You are one grain of sand on the beach.
You’re open to new experiences and cultures. You may even have friends and relatives that are BIPOC. But you’re ignoring the dangerous and cutting shards of glass BIPOC must wade through to traverse the beach.
This is the action MLK jr. referred to as infuriating.
When MLK jr. spoke about the moderate whites preference for peace over justice, this is the action he was referring to.
What BIPOC people need is not a verbal condemnation of racist behaviour and then denial this is reflective of the community.
It is reflective of the community. That’s why it’s happening. The fact it’s happening and being reported publicly means it’s escalating. But it’s always existed. As BIPOC can attest. And has for well over a century.
The question is what are we going to do about it?
Resigning responsibility for curbing these racist attacks to the police, the government or to BIPOC advocates of anti-racism is a cop out.
It is as much your responsibility to end this violence as it is anyone else’s responsibility. Because you’re a member of this community.
This is known as group think.
Has your desire for peace interfered with doing what’s right?
Because voicing an opinion is not changing the existence of racism & the tacit approval by governments and law enforcement. In fact those institutions continue to propagate it.
The same process is used with acceptance of inadequate covid measures and enforcement. By all reasoning, one can make an argument the two (racism and inadequate public health measures) stem from the same source.
Viewed using systems theory, we teach others how to treat us through our reaction to their treatment. When there is no consequence for heinous behaviour, that’s called tacit approval. It doesn’t matter if we complain or state clearly that we do not appreciate the behaviour.
Not one complaint registered in the US stopped the caging of babies and the separation of children from their family at the border.
Not one.
Thousands maybe millions verbally protested and spoke up.
Biden is in the process of repatriating families now.
Some children are permanently scarred and mentally damaged.
Those children’s lives were SACRIFICED because it was easier, safer & someone else’s responsibility to help them than to fight for the rights of those babies and children. So the population waited for an election.
For years congress and law enforcement waited.
People waited years for an election to remove Trump and his cabal. And allowed the physical, mental and sexual abuse of children, as young as newborns to continue.
Why? Group think. That’s why.
A stupid rationalization that to break the law, push the boundaries and force human beings to be treated with dignity was too much. Following the letter of the law was required, regardless of the outcome for those children.
Their value was unequal to the value for peace.
Coexistence and personal safety was deemed more important than challenging a system that was despicable, tortuous and aimed at children.
Americans will live with that shame forever. There is no absolution. They failed to obtain justice to protect their own security.
That’s the difference in calling out a racist and working to remove a racist from power.
BIPOC don’t care if you personally are a racist. They care whether you’re willing to help remove the conditions that make racism possible. To change the system. To remove the monsters.
Or at least ensure law enforcement and the government dole out consequences equal to the crimes committed.
BIPOC skin is already in the game. If you believe in human rights for all, then your skin should be in the game as well.
Not leaving it for a minority group to fight for equality. A lot of good that has done over the centuries.
That’s the criticism white middle class Canadians refuse to hear. They don’t want the responsibility to stop racism, but they’ll call it out.
Cancel culture doesn’t address racism. It exacerbates the animus between the dominant culture and minorities and leaves minorities to endure the never ending abuse by those who have been ritualistically shamed.
Shame and humiliation will not stop racism. But your virtue is on full display when you call it out.
BIPOC don’t care about your virtue. They care about being treated as equals and with dignity. We want to experience freedom to be who we are.
It’s just mainstream is too concerned with their own peaceful coexistence, safety and security to actually make changes in society.
Or they’re worried about attacks on their rights and liberties.
It’s infuriating. MLK jr. was right.
We have a provincial government that is literally killing us with inadequate covid measures and refusing to enforce the law and pandemic orders to appease those who commit most race crimes and who care only about stuffing their bank accounts with our money.
But let’s wait for an election in 2023. The people who die, suffer lifelong health complications and suffer racist attacks that are escalating are a small price to pay for security and mostly peaceful coexistence.
That’s why BIPOC people get angry and full of rage.
Because your actions speak far louder than the words used to criticize every incident of injustice. We need more than hopes and prayers. We need the public to say enough is enough. We won’t take this anymore.
We won’t listen to partisan hacks that try to separate a well documented history of Proud Boy support for conservative political parties.
We won’t accept that the premier and Attorney General do and say nothing when BIPOC women are attacked.
We won’t accept that our children are stuffed like sardines in perfect places for disease transmission.
We won’t accept some churches and protesters get to flout public health orders.
We the majority demand to be heard and listened to. Now!
This is what the anti-trust laws of the early 20th century were meant to prevent.
The result was to divide Standard Oil (John A. Rockefeller’s oil monopoly) into several smaller companies. That solution didn’t really fix the problem though.
Years later, US anti-trust laws are being lobbied heavily to be repealed and to allow unregulated monopolies.
Radicalized Evangelical Christians are putting the rest of the community in danger by refusing to abide by covid measures. Contempt for others’ health while spreading a deadly disease is not a religious right.
Just like Hawaii vacations. Apparently some people have more rights than others?
Maybe if the government pulls their licence to operate until covid is over or their parishioners are vaccinated?
I’m sure getting tired of covid doubters making life difficult for the rest of us & receiving polite letters and minimal fines for putting the public’s life at risk!
