Do you know who Oodgeroo Noonuccal is?
Oodgeroo Noonuccal aka Kath Walker (1920-1993) was an Aboriginal rights activist, poet, veteran, artist & educator.
She was best known for her poetry, & was the first Aboriginal Aust to publish a book of verse.
(Thread)
Oodgeroo Noonuccal was born in Minjerribah (Nth Stradbroke Island ) Qld in 1920. Her father, Edward, was a Quandamooka man from the Noonuccal Clan from the area around Moreton Bay & Stradbroke Island & her mother, Lucy, was of the Peewee clan from inland Australia.
In 1942, aged 21, she enlisted in Aust Women’s Army Service (AWAS) “I joined the AWAS principally because I didn’t accept fascism as a way of life, but it was also one of only two ways for an Aboriginal to further their Education: in jail or the Army... and I didn’t fancy jail!”
Following her military service, began to write poetry & in 1964, became the first published Aboriginal poet in Australia. Her poetry strongly reflected Aboriginal culture and her political beliefs. She went on to win multiple awards.

From the 1960s she increased in prominence as an Aboriginal leader & activist. She was elected as Qld State Secretary of the Federal Council for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advancement (FCAATSI) & was a member of the Qld Aboriginal Advancement League executive.
Oodgeroo & FCAATSI were prominent leaders in the 1967 referendum.
Aboriginal people were no longer subject to 6 different systems of law depending on which state they lived & it was hoped that new national laws would be created to promote rights & equality for Aboriginal people.
While campaigning for ‘Yes’ vote Oodgeroo famously met PM Robert Menzies who offered her a glass of sherry. She then informed him he could be arrested, as it was illegal to offer Aboriginal ppl alcohol & this challenged Menzies to rethink some of his views about Aboriginal ppl.

In 1971, Oodgeroo returned to Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) where she started a learning centre named Moongalba (the sitting-down place). She taught about Aboriginal culture & Country to the visitors who came to the island. redlandcitybulletin.com.au/story/6944197/… (what an amazing centre 🤗)
Awards: Mary Gilmore medal (1970), Jessie Litchfield Award (1975), International Acting Award & Fellowship of Aust Writers Award.
In 1987 she famously returned her MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in protest of the bicentennial celebration of Australia Day.
Oodgeroo passed away in September 1993, with many coming to farewell her at her funeral in Minjerribah.
She is remembered by many as a charismatic, strong leader whose beautiful poetry captured both the strength of Aboriginal culture, while standing up for Aboriginal rights.

@MichaelWestBiz I vote CCC Qld; Who after my friend and I gave a public interest disclosure to “under section 12 of act which states member of the public can make a disclosure if the health and safety of a person with a disability is a direct risk”
.... cont
@MichaelWestBiz ..... accompanied with 4 letters from 4 separate Drs all stating a 12-year-old special needs girl life at immediate risk of fatality due to Qld Children’s Hospital refusing her surgery & medical treatment for over 600 days
(this is after disclosure given was given to Premier..
@MichaelWestBiz .... alleging serious misconduct, maladministration, corrupt conduct and anti-competitive behaviour on behalf of Queensland health specifically the CHO - premier sent disclosure to CHO, person named in disclosure, reprisals commence - incl premier standing in parliament...
Dear @MarkMcGowanMP ,
Youve done a great job protecting West Australian lives during pandemic, however there is an epidermic thats killing more ppl than a virus & we need your help....
Sir, why is the specific act of domestic violence not a crime in WA?
(Thread)
Physical abuse is a crime yes however non physical abuse is not ie:Financial, social, systems, emotional, legal abuse, gaslighting & coercive control.
There is more of a penalty for catching a fish that is too small - than there is destroying the life of another... why?
Your own government is telling the public face types of abuse are wrong and to speak out if they are victims. - but who exactly are victims supposed to speak out to @MarkMcGowanMP? Because without a law criminalising these things @WA_Police can’t do anything...
🖤💛❤️ Do you know who the Aboriginal man who features on Australia’s $2 coin is?
Gwoya Tjungurrayi 🖤💛❤️
1895 – 28/3/1965
A Walpiri-Anmatyerre man of the NT - how did Tjungurrayi be come so famous?
(Thread)
Tjungurrayi was born in the Tanami Desert in the NT, 200 km Nw of Alice Springs, in the region surrounding Coniston Station around 1895. His first name Gwoja means water. His last name reflects his skin name.
2/9
As pastoralism expanded in the region early 1900s, further into Tjungurrayi's ancestral country, tensions intensified during drought of 1920s, with increasing competition over water & food.
He survived the Coniston Massacre in the then Territory of Central Australia in 1928

Thread: Wholeheartedly agree @vanOnselenP
But we don’t need a royal commission, we all know what went wrong, we watched it unfold. Everyone l was telling gov this was wrong & hurting ppl, they failed to act.
It was arrogance, incompetence, over reliance of bureaucrats.. 1/7
& a deep prejudice held against welfare recipients, with assumption ppl without money are below them; assuming ppl would rort system, assuming gov could bully ppl & no one would fight back - it’s EXACT same behaviour & cash grab by @ato_gov_au that @Richard_D_Boyle exposed 2/7
@Richard_D_Boyle & @4corners disclosure, stopped @ato_gov_au & saved lives + prevented suicides - but Richard now faces 162 yrs jail for doing so
@JaneCaro & @vanOnselenP are right, but how could ppl hold gov to account & prevented deaths without risking same as Richard? 3/7
Why is Twiggy Forrest buying Gov influence? (see thread) 1) Purchase of COVID19 test kits gives Chinese diplomat access gov briefing 2) China being biggest customer for FMG iron ore 3) Former FMG CEO Nev Powers appointed head gov COVID19 committee
4) Remembering Twiggy was banned by ASIC from being CEO for misleading the sharemarket in regards to value of contract with Chinese steelmills. 5) Influencing gov policy over cashless welfare card with charity work with Aboriginal communities
6) Same time he refuses to pay cash royalties to Yindjibarndi over high court decisions they have sole native title over land FMG Solomon mine is situated in WA. Stating they don’t know how to manage money & will waste it 7) Stating giving them jobs and business contracts better
@AnneM67993158@MarkRyanQLD@seanrubinsztein@CoPCarroll I put in PID to @ccc_qld under sec 12 “member of public can make disclosure if health & safety of person with disability st immediate risk” + 4 x letters from Dr’s stating child’s life at immediate risk + evidence same impacting huhdreds more kids + evidence of reprisals ... cont
