Despite the unfortunate title, let me state emphatically, the scientists stand with the teachers. There’s no daylight between us. We are scientists in part because of our K-12 teachers. There’s no choice, our teachers/staff should be vaccinated, we must. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…
We have opportunities to mobilize more vaccines, we should take advantage of this
With the variants coming, really important to vaccinate the teachers and staff, we should be able to do this quickly
If you want a more articulate version of what I just said, listen and read @JReinerMD @CNN terrific interview and op ed, where he talks about his mom who served as public school teacher for 100 years (or some significant fraction of that time)
It also goes back to what I’ve been saying, what are the top priorities of this administration’s vaccination plan? Is it: 1) reduce hospitalizations and deaths, 2) interrupt virus transmission, 3) open the economy, 4) open schools? You cannot do all 4 right now, pick your top 2
Eventually we’ll get to all 4, but with only 1.5 million immunizations per day, some tough choices have to be made. The ACIP CDC guidelines are from La La land. If it were me, I would pick numbers one and four: save lives, protect the teachers/staff and open schools.
There are different ways to do this, I could whiteboard 2 or 3 different approaches to make this happen, simple, streamlined, unfussy
