.@IBM is moving towards a future built on the hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence, and ultimately quantum computing. The company's chairman and CEO, @ArvindKrishhna, is explaining why right now at #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents Image

What is the hybrid cloud? This 2019 white paper @IBM has made available on its website offers an explanation. #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents ibm.com/downloads/cas/…
The hybrid-cloud "is where the money is, it’s where the architecture is, it gives the clients value" - @IBM chairman and CEO @ArvindKrishna #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents Image
Now we’re talking about SolarWinds and how @IBM manages an ecosystem of cybersecurity software vendors it doesn’t quite control. #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents technologyreview.com/2020/12/15/101… Image
"We can solve the risks in our platforms," says @ArvindKrishna. "What is the third and fourth party risk that comes with it?" It's a question of homogeneity vs. heterogeneity, he says. #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents
"Today, if our value lies in our cyber-infrastructure, you’re going to get cyberattacks. We have to step up what we do...the same way national security and policing did in previous eras" - @ArvindKrishna #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents
The failure of IBM Watson is a “timeline question” says @ArvindKrishna. It was too aspirational five years ago, he says. It will take another 5-10 years. #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents
One area @ArvindKrishna can't help but get excited about is providing artificial intelligence with reasoning.

"AI is incredible at pattern matching, but that's what deep learning is," he says. "We know from history that pattern matching is not enough."
"You have to put in reasoning, knowledge, and representation together with current AI techniques and that will dramatically move the needle," says @ArvindKrishna. "That's where we see our [enterprise] business exploding." #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents
One last question: what technology are you excited about in the near future that you believe people aren't talking enough about.

@ArvindKrishna: Quantum technology, coupled with lattice-based cryptography and quantum homomorphic encryption. #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents

On January 24, while Southern California’s ICU was at 0% capacity, a group of businessmen were on their way to a pandemic year rarity: an indoor, in-person, mostly unmasked business conference called the Abundance 360 Summit (A360). technologyreview.com/2021/02/13/101…
A360 was created by Peter Diamandis, the founder of the XPrize Foundation and Singularity University, and co-founder and board member of covid-19 vaccine developer Covaxx.

This is a thread about how deepfake porn is ruining women’s lives—and how the law may finally ban it. technologyreview.com/2021/02/12/101…
While deepfakes have received enormous attention for their potential political dangers, the vast majority of them are used to target women. technologyreview.com/2019/10/10/132…
.@sensityai, a research company that has tracked online deepfake videos since December of 2018, has consistently found that between 90% and 95% of them are nonconsensual porn. sensity.ai/how-to-detect-…

And now the last session of #FutureCompute:

-What are the top tech execs investing in right now?
-What’s taking up their energy?
-What’s on their horizon?

#TechReviewEvents Image
.@chrisbedi of @servicenow: The overarching theme during the pandemic is "an acceleration of digital, internally and externally, as we serve our customers." #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents
@lakshmihanspal of @Box adds that during the pandemic they saw an acceleration of identity, data, and "seamless access to tools" when any "company is only secure as its most insecure links." #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents

We're talking about edge computing with @ShaileshBayArea of @googlecloud. But first, what is the edge? 🤔 #FutureCompute #TechReviewEvents Image
(1/2) @ShaileshBayArea: The edge is an extension of the data center or the distributed cloud that's closer to the end of user.
It's made up of four specific locations:

-The device or sensor (think a smartphone, IoT device, or automobile)
-The enterprise edge (an office or factory floor)
-The telecom-edge
-The public-cloud edge

If you’re on the job hunt, you might be hired based on your performance in computer games scored by AI. Before you start the process, there are a few things you should know. We’ll walk you through them in this thread. Image
More companies are using AI-based hiring tools to manage the flood of applications they receive–especially now that there are more jobless workers in the US due to the pandemic.

As with other AI applications, though, researchers have found that some hiring tools produce biased results. Many are now advocating for greater transparency and more regulation.
