/7 The key question is: will the firearms bill announced yesterday make Canadians more safe? The answer is no. #canpoli#publicsafety#firearms
/7 Nearly 500 shootings in Toronto last yr. Near record yr (despite existing gun ban & lockdwns) & vast majority by gangs- with illegal guns. Bill C-21 muni power & confiscation-in-place program only targets already law abiding firearms owners.
/7 #CPC opposes the OiC & the confiscation of firearms from law abiding, licensed owners. How can #LPC actually not have brought forward compensation details while prohibiting use, transfer, transport, or sale?
/7 If argument is certain firearms are so dangerous by their existence that they need to be confiscated-in-place, & banned for use - how do they square leaving them all in homes? Lucky they are law abiding owners. But bad policy.
/7 #LPC reduce serious sentences, oversee major court backlogs, preside over backlogs in evidence labs, reject proposals to make a difference like Bill C-238 (CPC’s anti-gun smuggling bill.)
/7 #CPC says focus on fight against gangs & illegal gun smuggling, trading, & criminal possession - create a focused CBSA & law enforcement smuggling unit on both sides of border, enhance individual sharing between RCMP, CBSA & other police forces.
/7 #CPC supports incrsd min & max sentences for smuggled firearms, & penalties for providing firearms to someone prohibited from owning them. Crack down on gangs - end auto bail, revoke parole for gang mbrs, new/tougher sentences for ordering & involvement in violent gang crime.
