#campylobacter Incubation period is typically 2-5days. Sx: diarrhea (frequently bloody), abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. More severe illness can occur, including bloodstream infection and symptoms mimicking acute appendicitis or ulcerative colitis.
#Campylobacter gram-negative, microaerophilic genus of bacteria of family Campylobacteriacae. >20 species, not all of which cause human illness. Approximately 90% illness is caused by C jejuni. Less common C. coli, C. upsaliensis, C. fetus, C. lari
#Campylobacter jejuni grows best at 37°C to 42°C & are fragile. They cannot tolerate drying. Freezing reduces the number of Campylobacter bacteria on raw meat.
Most people with #Campylobacter recover completely in 1wk.
long-term consequences: arthritis, IBS & GBS
CDC estimates 0.2 to 1.7 in every 1,000 diagnosed & undiagnosed Campylobacter leads to GBS, but estimates Campylobacter are responsible for 5-41% of GBS illnesses
#Campylobacter R.f. raw or undercooked poultry or another food contaminated by raw or undercooked poultry.
Outbreaks w/ unpasteurized dairy products, contaminated water, poultry, and produce, contact with dog or cat feces
Most infections tx supportive
Abx for severe dz. Azithromycin & FQ are commonly used for treatment, but R to FQ is common
