Did I just sleep through a statewide emergency prep PR campaign last week that advised Texans to gas up, stock up ahead of this storm. Oh, that's right, there wasn't one. But #ifthiswereahurricane, we'd have flashing TxDOT signs, alerts, because Texas does *do* that.
Also trying to understand a grid that pays its executives north of $200K, and its CEO $800K-plus why possible scenarios weren't relayed to utilities, say last weekend. Weather was predicted accurately.
It's not like the state of Texas doesn't have some of the best forecasting going on. You can't be in the oil and gas industry without forecasters on staff. Hell, we got rockets going off here. So weather, kind of important to track.
And it's not as if Texas didn't learn from the double-whammy of Katrina/Rita in 2005 to *drastically* overhaul its emergency prep for hurricanes. The state created retail and gas teams who would coordinate and flood a zone with supplies when a storm is like 300 miles offshore...
Then, as the hurricane comes closer, the retail/gas teams move back along evacuation routes. The result, not a lot of struggle for supplies say during Hurricane Ike/Harvey that we saw pre Katrina. After Rita hit in '05, Houston was out of gas completely for 8 days, I kid you not.
So Texas said then: never again and actually did reform the evacuation/supply system. And here's the thing. It *worked.* So can someone tell me why those teams were not contacted for an unprecedented event that was predicted?

Lot of you have been without far longer than me (28+ hours). You're exhausted by the pandemic, exhausted by this event where you just want some damn heat. You're exhausted by no gas at the gas station, by lines 100 people deep to get into the one open grocery store.
I got neighbors boiling snow on gas stoves to keep dishes clean because pipes are frozen. People are homeless in this. People will die because of this. We are all seething. I get it. And trust me the state's reporters are already surgically at work to unpack this disaster...
In the meantime, here's a bit of kindness I'd like to recognize. Thanks to two strangers I met today there are a few people in my South Austin neighborhood who have firewood tonight. So thanks Kathryn (don't know last name) of Eloise House,

Because I'm a selfish single person with time on my hands + no one over 65 in my house, dove into Texas govt vaccine websites tonight...to better understand all the outrage we're hearing from listeners. Walk with me, #txlege. 1/9
Started by typing what most people would: “How do I get a COVID vaccine in Texas?” Seems simple enough. The top answer is @TexasDSHS ( state’s health agency) vaccine page: dshs.state.tx.us/coronavirus/im… So far, so good. 2/9
But like most govt agencies, there's a ton of text to wade through. Like who has this kind of time? I skim to the money grafs: 3/9

Cheering on my fellow #Texas #journos from Nashville (where I've got a delayed flite to @DallasLoveField). As a reader, I want a map with where the immigrant kids are, name of contractor, how much paid so far this year by fed taxpayers, how many kids detained. #makeithappen
@DallasLoveField I want to know EVERYTHING re these contractors. What kind of license they possess or last inspection to care for kids. I want to know who their CEOs are, what lawmakers take their money. If they apply restraints on kids. #makeithappen #Texas #journos.
@DallasLoveField #TXjournos: I want to know what capacity is for each center. I want to know which #Texas, fed agency certified them. I want to SEE every PDF that details all protocols of feeding, caring for these kids. I want staffer/doctor/kid ratios. Names of all subcontractors. #MakeItHappen
