1/ There's a communications technique called "Public Narrative". Created by a Harvard prof, it has influenced leading politicians (Obama) and business people (Bezos).

Once you learn it, you see it everywhere...like in Vlad Tenev's GameStop speech.

Let me explain 🧵
2/ "Public Narrative" was created by Marshall Ganz, a Harvard PhD, community organizer & Harvard lecturer.

It's a way structure speech so to persuade and turn values into action. It's been used by lawyers, politicians, activists, PR, teachers and business folk of all stripes.
3/ "Public Narrative" is composed of 3 parts:

• Story of self (a personal story, which invites listeners to connect w/ the teller)
• Story of us (a collective "we" story to show shared purpose)
• Story of now (an urgent story to create action)

Again: Turn values --> action
4/ Example 1: Barack Obama's 2004 DNC Speech

• Story of self (personal story = my father is from Kenya...)
• Story of us (collective story = faith in the American Dream)
• Story of now (an urgent story = "we stand at the crossroads of history" and voting is critical)
5/ Example 2: Jeff Bezos' antitrust opening statement

• Story of self (personal story = my mom had me when she was 17...)
• Story of us (collective story = risk-taking entrepreneurship is the American Dream)
• Story of now (an urgent story = race, climate change, pandemic)
6/ Example 3: Elon Musk's famous cold phone call to Jim Cantrell when he wanted to start a rocket company
7/ Example 4: Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev's GameStop statement

• Story of self (personal story = born in Bulgaria, inaccessible financial system)
• Story of us (collective story = investing is a right)
• Story of now (an urgent story = wealth inequality needs to be addressed)
8/ To be clear, I'm not passing judgement on the actual content of this text. As with any persuasion tool, it can be used for good or ill.

I just want to demonstrate that Marshall Ganz's "Public Narrative" technique is everywhere.

Trust me, you can't un-see it now.

12/ Best part of this thread.

All the random PhD social science professors yelling “gOoGlE aRiStOtLe” or “hElLo RhEtOrIc” in the comments.
13/ POSTSCRIPT: I triggered the entire Rhetoric dept at UT Austin.

They take issue with the Harvard prof, saying he’s just stealing Aristotle’s work (which he does cite).

None of the comments actually address the analysis of the thread.

People pay 5-figure tuition for this?

How Citi’s UX costed it $900m:
1️⃣ On a debt instrument, the bank was supposed to pay out interest only
2️⃣ To prevent the payment of principal, you have to (confusingly) check 3 boxes: “Front”, “Fund”, “Principal”
3️⃣ The employee clicked “Principal” but not the other ones...😬 Image
On a related note, Citi has 193 job openings for "UI" right now Image
Incredible coverage from @matt_levine obviously

Bloomberg with a great explainer on Texas energy crisis.

1/ How did it start

Polar vortex sweeping through US is causing surge in demand for heating fuels (oil, natural gas, propane) + electricity
2/ How’d it turn to energy crisis

Heating fuel demand occurred as supply went offline:
— wind turbines froze
— oil wells shut in
— gas pipelines seized up

Energy traders were panicking as early as Feb. 12, with gas prices for physical delivery exploding. Image
3/ Texas’ grid ran out of natural gas

And some of it’s wind farms failed, taking 40% of expected electricity generating activity offline.

Wholesale electricity hit $9k/mWh, the max allowed. Image

1/ Amazon is famous for its writing culture:

• "Mock press releases / FAQs" for new product pitches
• "6-page memos" instead of Powerpoint

Two former Amazon execs wrote a book called "Working Backwards" detailing the philosophy.

Here are some insights 🧵
2/ The "Working Backwards" playbook

Instead of creating a product then finding customers, Amazon asks "What does the customer need?" and works toward the product.

✅Customer need --> Create product
❌Create product --> Find customer
3/ Write a mock press release

To determine if the customer need makes biz sense, employees write a press release:

• What problem is the new product solving
• Why it's better than existing options

To persuade a customer, the document has to be jargon-free and tell a story.

1/ In 2018, Elon Musk backed 2 alum from The Onion w/ $2m to launch Thud! -- a satirical media venture that was to be the start of an "intergalactic media empire."

The venture failed, but created some hilarious projects.

Here's the story...it starts with an Onion article 🧵
2/ Its 2014, when $TSLA was worth ~$40B.

Musk -- a long time fan of The Onion -- reached out to the team about an acquisition after reading this article.

The deal falls apart b/c Musk didn't want to buy Onion's news business (AV Club) or its ad biz.
theonion.com/we-re-going-to…
3/ The failed deal doesn't blunt Musk's fandom.

In a Rolling Stone interview, he (prob seriously) says "In order to understand the essential truth of things...I think you can find it in The Onion and occasionally on Reddit.”

He also happily calls them out on Twitter for jokes:
