Brief thread: Nothing against #Draghi, but this is one of those moments when Italy doesn’t feel like a properly functioning democracy to me. A govt of all the parties, left and right, which have nothing in common, but have joined the govt out of pure opportunism. Not out 1/
of any sense of national spirit or unity. Led by someone who not only isn’t a politician and wasn’t elected, but didn’t even have any connection with the last election. Someone who is supposed to come in and rule “over” the parties, which aren’t supposed to get in his way. 2/
Someone who is treated like a messiah by virtually all the media, in a climate in which you feel almost like a corageous dissident if you even think of writing something critical about him. 3/
Of course Italy IS a democracy in the formal sense, and of course Draghi has every formal and legal right to be PM. That goes without saying, but it’s not the point. This situation is very different to what most people think a healthy democracy should look like. 4/
Of course I hope Draghi does great things and passes great reforms, but that’s not the point either. If it happens it would be a case of a good outcome coming out of a bad situation
