Visions of Canada-Canadian Studies in Europe- vol6- When we try to define a Canadian Metis identity we are immediately faced with a problem.
Visions of Canada-Canadian Studies in Europe- vol6-Term Metis derives from Metice, which is cited as an Indigenous word since 1615, and which describes anyone born to a white male to an Indian woman or conversely.
Eastern Métis: Chronicling and Reclaiming a Denied Past - edited by Michel Bouchard, Sébastien Malette, Siomonn Pulla - "Metis" is a French word meaning "which comes amazon.ca/Eastern-Métis-…
from the crossing of races; whose mother and father are of different races" and/or "descendant of a metis and a person of a specified race" (Rey 2001, 1424).7 The word is attested in French, under the forms metice and metif as early as 1615 (Pyrard 1615, 60).
The word derives from the French adjective métis, also spelled metice, referring to a hybrid, or someone of mixed ancestry.:1080 In the 16th century, French colonists used the term métis as a noun for people of mixed European and indigenous American parentage in New France (now
Quebec), at the time, it applied generally to French-speaking people who were of partial ethnic French descent. Which as you can clearly see, makes this statement absolutely ridiculous !!

The Other Natives- the-les Metis- Winnipeg-Manitoba Metis Federation Press-1978 #metisse#Metis#Metice Acceptance of all of these definitions on the part of the Métis present a unique identity and unity crisis for them. Parochialism, language, regionalism, and politics have all
had a hand in promoting this disunity and identity problem amongst a once proud and ambitious group. Our history as Métis people needs to be re-emphasized, not rewritten; discussions must go on at community levels to foster Métis identity on a Provincial scale forgetting
language, religious, and regional differences. We must not forget also that we are the product of two races -one does not need to continually harp on “our” Indian heritage to be Métis; what about our white forefathers? They, too, need to be recognized. By accepting both sides
of our heritage, perhaps we too could stand up as Louis Riel once did and proclaim:
"𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Lets look at this another way shall we -- "Indigenous" people: "French Canadian". Remember that "French-Canadian"= French Canadian. French Canadian=French descent. French descent=white. White ≠ Indigenous / Do we all see how ridiculous this is? Yes .. 🤣 "Most people tend to
