This explains what we always thought was true about @Facebook. They have consistently make special commutations for outlets like Breitbart, The Daily Wire and InfoWars despite their breaches of the Terms of Service.
We have been pushing @facebook to simply enforce their own rules for years, as have others, and have consistently found that they were unwilling to do even the bare minimum.
Politics should be separated from moderation decisions and rules should be enforced equally. They’re not.
This, from an employee who left @facebook because of its damaging policy decisions, gets it right.
No one is asking Facebook to throw people off their platform based on their ideology, they are simply asking the company to enforce their terms. It isn’t happening.
In fact, Joel Kaplan is flying cover for some of the worst actors like Breitbart and Fox, emboldening them to post increasingly inflammatory content.
It was never explained by @campbell_brown why Breitbart was made a “trusted” news source.
Now we know.
About a year ago, journalist @JuddLegum found that Daily Wire was very clearly breaking @facebook’s rules for artificial amplification. The company simply shrugged. That was always puzzling.
You can see now that Kaplan very likely stepped in to ensure they could continue.
Even after a report from @MichaelEHayden that Breitbart was found to be publishing white supremacist talking points for Stephen Miller, @facebook did nothing.
Almost no other workplace in America would tolerate that. Kaplan ensured that Facebook would.
While Breitbart and InfoWars decry “censorship” of their ideas, it’s now clear that they’ve actually been given special treatment afforded to no one else by @facebook and Kaplan.
These are not “conservative” ideas, they are everything from harassment to white supremacy.
This goes far beyond banning Alex Jones. Bending your rules to placate those in power is perhaps the most dangerous action that @facebook has made. It’s the type of decision that leads to genocides, as the platform touched off in Myanmar.
1,100 advertisers left @facebook last July as a part of #stophateforprofit because the platform was not taking a strong enough stance on hate and violence and they should definitely consider it again until changes are made. Kaplan continues to be a disruptive and dangerous force.
And, more than anything, this shows the need for meaningful regulation of @facebook and independent oversight.
Decisions being made about the flow of information cannot be left to one of two people.
Especially ideologically driven ones.
We only need to look at what happened on January 6th to see the incredible damage that was done on @Facebook even AFTER they said they were going to take a harder stance on militants.
Who knows what the rules are and who is flying cover for those who break them?

As is pointed out in this piece, @amazon is the last large advertiser on Breitbart, supporting their content after nearly every other brand abandoned them.
This is emblematic of their history of ignoring moderation and responsibility in favor of profits.
The reason that @amazon can ignore extremism is because they have a monopoly.
With it, they have no need to stop selling, as they have in the past, Nazi merchandise, or stop extremists from selling prepper kits. To them, it’s all cash.
.@Facebook has now allowed rumors to spread on their platforms that have touched off a genocide and, likely soon, yet another.
@youtube has allowed QAnon and the anti-vaccine movement to grow from fringe theories to massive movements.
And now, after Parler (along with Facebook) enabled militia groups to literally plan the overthrow of the US government and almost succeed, @SkySilkCloud is allowing it back online using their servers.
.@Verizon, one of Fox’s biggest advertisers, made a strong statement in support of racial justice, but they hand Fox millions to lie about George Floyd and defend white supremacists.
.@gm and @cadillac, major sponsors of Fox News, gave $10 million to fund racial justice. Today, they continue to sponsor Fox shows which say Black Lives Matter has torn the fabric of our country.
