#BCed teachers are deeply concerned to hear about exposures connected to more infectious variants of COVID19 in schools in Surrey and Delta. It is time for decisive action by government and health officials to counter this new threat to the safety of schools. #BCpoli thread ⬇️
It’s imperative that staff, students, and parents within these #bced communities follow the directions of health officials. In the broader community, we need people to do all they can to limit the potential spread of these variants, so they don’t find their way into our schools.
However, it’s clear that the existing measures are not enough. We need the #bced Ministry of Education, #bcpoli, Provincial Health Officer, and Health Authorities to do more to protect staff, students and the families they all go home to.
The #BCpoli government and health officials have the power to make schools safer and they must use that power. With COVID19 variants clearly spreading in communities, it is time for these officials to take immediate action. #bced
#BCed districts need the authority to go above and beyond the established health and safety guidelines when necessary. When there is a high rate of COVID19 within a community, a school district should be able to make regional or site-based enhancements to the safety protocols.
Those #bced enhancements must include mandating masks everywhere in specific schools, including at elementary schools, and making changes to schedules or online learning access to reduce density and increase physical distancing.
#BCed districts need to be able to exceed the health guidelines to ensure everyone in schools is better protected, especially when there has been an exposure to a COVID19 variant. This will help keep people in schools safe.
Better protections at #bced schools will also prevent the variants of concern from spreading to vulnerable adults living in students’ homes. #bcpoli
#BCed needs widespread rapid testing when a COVID19 variant shows up in schools. This is not the time to be conservative with testing. Everyone connected to a class with a COVID19 variant exposure should receive a rapid test. #bcpoli

Teachers want to get back into classrooms and help give our students the best education possible. And, like every other worker, we have a right to be safe. The #bcpoli government's #bced restart plan needs more prevention measures to ensure everyone's safety. Thread:
The #bcpoli government and health officials have done excellent work on enhancing contact tracing strategies, but our #bced members are rightly concerned that not enough has been done on preventing the transmission of the virus in schools.
BC should be pursuing a remote learning model for #bced that would allow for in-class and remote learning, especially for medically complex children. It’s important that this option maintains students’ connection to their local school. #bcpoli

Our response to #bcpoli's #bced restart plan: bctf.ca/NewsReleases.a….

The plan is not ready and needs more work if it’s going to be successful, keep everyone safe. We are pleased to see more funding for cleaning and PPE, but too many unanswered questions remain at this time.
Thread from #bced's @TeriMooring: “The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on all of us, especially children and youth,. Education is vital and we all agree that students need to return to school, rebuild their social connections, and learn from their teachers in a classroom setting.
"A lot of excellent work has already gone into the restart planning by the steering committee and working groups, but this announcement misses the mark on several critical components and should go back to those working groups.

When the #bcpoli government decided to expand #bced in-class instruction this spring, we went to work to ensure strong and very effective health and safety measures would be in place. We appreciate the hard work and collaboration, but there are still areas that need more work.
We know many teachers and parents are anxious and concerned. That's understandable.

We're pleased that the safety standards are provincial and that districts can't rush to open before June 1st. It's good to see that their plans need to be approved and completed. #bced #bcpoli
It's also good that there is recognition that wearing a mask is a personal choice and that it’s important to treat people wearing masks with respect. However, more work is needed on the availability of PPE for teachers who want or need it. #bced #bcpoli
