you can simplify the second half of the sentence to be, "I also believe we must... do science"
which then translates to
"I believe in following the science, but I also believe we must do science" 🙃
which then translates to
"I believe in following the science, but I also believe we must do science" 🙃
which suggests to me that "following the science" is a euphemism for kowtowing to the scientific establishment, which perhaps might occasionally have a cursory and incidental interest in doing a little science
"for the most part I believe in 'following the science', but occasionally from time to time we may have to actually do science"
this isn't some random guy, this is the former Surgeon General of the United States
I don't mean this thread as some sort of "gotcha" for a specific individual, I mean... I just think it's always good to be reminded that the Establishment of X isn't always synonymous with Doing X. Don't assume that the Department of Education is interested in Education, etc
