I saw some news about Stephen Miller, and it's always framed like "his controversial opinions" or whatever, and you HAVE to think how different the world would be if the media had just always said "Stephen Miller is a deeply damaged virulent racist" any time it discussed him.
If we've learned anything in the past 5 years it's that LITERALLY ANYONE can be selected for a position of power. The job interview qualifications of being a McDonald's fry cook do not even apply to working in the White House.
So, when the media treats politicians with a baseline of respect just because they have jobs in politics, it does us so much harm. If you wouldn't trust a damaged virulent racist man babysitting your kids, WHY would you give that man the benefit of the doubt as a politician?
"Both-sides" "neutrality" is the problem here, because as long as we keep treating psychopaths like Steven Miller as "a politician with controversial opinions" we will never get past this. We will never move on. It's maddening.
The media needs to take a test of "would you let this man babysit or educate your kids?" and if the answer is no, that opinion NEEDS to override both-sides neutrality. The news NEEDS to talk about bad people as actual just BAD PEOPLE, regardless of their political jobs.
Every single news reporter speaking the words "controversial q-anon supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene" is also someone who wouldn't even hire that lunatic to run a lemonade stand, and that isn't biased politics, it's basic reality that NEEDS to be communicated.
If it was discovered that someone as evil/racist as Stephen Miller was running a daycare, the news would be screaming for weeks “HOW DID THIS HAPPEN??” But because for some reason POTUS can just hire ANY random asshole, the news will never have that appropriate reaction.
This cycle causes SO MUCH HARM, and it’s all because our media is conditioned to think that if you talk about a politician for who they objectively are, you’ll be seen as “biased” and then you’re a bad journalist. It’s a disease in our society pols exploit, and PEOPLE ARE DYING.
If we’d all had the honest conversation “Donald Trump, as a human being, does not care, at all, if anyone dies,” it could have saved so many lives. You don’t have to agree with everyone’s politics. But we have to be honest about objectively EVIL people who shouldn’t have power.
