People often ask me how I deal with the endless hate when watching far-right and misinformation spaces, but lately I am just overwhelmed by the sadness. These people are disconnected from reality, their friends and families. They live in a sad alternative reality with no hope.
They seek community and purpose, which are really good human qualities, and are being prayed upon and financially exploited by grifters and narcissists. We won't fix any of this if we don't start making them better offers, but nobody seems to be interested in that.
And I don't want to give believers of these conspiracy myths a pass and absolve them of their agency, their beliefs are dangerous and hurt others. But I am missing empathy and a way back for them into reality in the way we tackle these problems.
But I also struggle with a good way to cope when looking at this content daily. You just absorb the sadness and it fills you up more and more. Taking breaks helps, but it's not really a long-term solution :/
