Throughout #BlackHistoryMonth, our very own producer @BTerrell88 sought out the people making Black history right now.

Watch — you’re getting a first look at the young, gifted, and Black folks shaping tomorrow.
Meet Lauren “Lo” Harris, @loharris_art, the artist who went viral for capturing the trauma and promise of our summer of racial justice.
This is Cavanaugh Bell, an 8-year-old who’s already spent his life savings — and more — to give food and comfort to senior citizens confined to their homes during the pandemic.
Washington Football Team assistant running back coach @JenniferKing5 is living her dream and breaking barriers while doing it — she’s the first Black woman to be a full-time NFL coach.
Fresh off the heels of a summer of racial justice protests, @noah10harris became the first Black student body president of Harvard University.

He ran on the platform of building a more equitable Harvard — and he’s already made good on his word.

FBI Director Christopher Wray tells the Senate Judiciary Committee the January 6 attack on the Capitol was "domestic terrorism."
FBI Director Christopher Wray: "Racially motivated violent extremism — specifically of the sort that advocates for the superiority of the white race — is a persistent, evolving threat ... and [it] is the biggest chunk of our domestic terrorism portfolio."
FBI Director Christopher Wray: No evidence of anarchist violent extremists, no evidence of Antifa, in connection with the January 6th insurrection.

Georgia’s Black population turned out in record numbers for the November election. They clinched the victory for Joe Biden, the first Democrat to win the state since 1992.

Now, Republicans in the state want to make it harder for Georgians to vote.
motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
GA state Republicans have introduced bills to drastically change voting procedures.

One House bill limits weekend early voting to just one Saturday — eliminating early voting on Sundays, when Black churches hold “Souls to the Polls” events.
npr.org/2021/02/19/969…
The bills, released with little public notice, tick voter suppression boxes:

✅ Adding voter ID requirements to mail-in ballots
✅ Limiting the time frame to request & send back ballots
✅ Ending no-excuse absentee voting
✅ Removing ballot drop boxes

Last month, Texas resident Royce Peirce paid $387.70 to heat his two-story house. This month, he owes $8,162.73 — and counting.

Amid freezing temperatures and another looming winter storm, Texans are facing a second crisis: astronomical power bills.
thedailybeast.com/dollar5152-pow…
Why are these energy bills so high? You can thank Texas’s power grid for that.

The U.S. is divided into three grids: one covers the eastern states, another the western states, and then there’s the Texas grid, ERCOT, which covers nearly the entire state.
Now you might be wondering: Why does Texas have its own power grid?

If you’re familiar with the state’s history and public policy, you probably already know the answer. In short, Texas has its own grid to avoid dealing with the federal government.

Discussing the Capitol Insurrection, @BetoORourke just now mentioned that Sen. Ted Cruz reportedly hightailed it to Cancun, Mexico, while his constituents freeze to death and have to boil water.
One reporter confirmed the Cruz-to-Cancun photo, though it is unclear if this was confirmed with Cruz's staff or the senator himself. More to come, surely.

“To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” — an anthem that has inspired decades of politicians, artists, and activists.

Let’s spend a moment during #BlackHistoryMonth with Nina Simone’s iconic piece of civil rights history.
“To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” was written in 1969 after the death of Simone’s long time friend and playwright, Lorainne Hansberry.

Hansberry was the first Black woman to stage a play on Broadway, “A Raisin in the Sun.”
The lyrics speak to the power of the millions of young, gifted, Black people publicly celebrating Black identity in the late ‘60s.

“In the whole world you know / There's a million boys and girls / Who are young, gifted and Black / And that's a fact”
