As the calls for reimaging public safety become louder and louder, the cops are gonna become slicker and slicker. One of the ways that'll probably happen is them trying to direct money to the exact programs groups like @lacan and @BLMLA have been ringing the bell on for years.
Cops are liars and utterly unconcerned with safety, helping, or improving. Their aim will be to expand as many of these programs as possible so that they can keep the money. They've already shown what their idea of reimagining is when they decided to create a new ass bureau (CSP)
All they want to do is reimagine ways for them to get money. We're seeing reports on existing programs coming back around. Lucky for us, these reports make plain how bad these programs are. Here's a report coming up at this week's Public Safety Committee: clkrep.lacity.org/onlinedocs/202…
One of the programs mentioned is SMART (Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team.) It's described as embedding mental health professionals in the police agency. The report then lists all of the many situations in which mental health clinicians aren't actually involved.
The report also mentions how the cops will drop people off at facilities very far from where they live. Keep in mind, these are often people without the resources to just hop in an Uber back to their homes. So they're effectively stranding them.
If we continue not funding mental health services but dump more money into this program, there will be more people directed at services that still won't exist. Everything you read about CAHOOTS, STAR, etc. stresses the importance of this "handoff" and they're saying we suck at it
The report also talks about DART (Domestic Abuse Response Teams.) There's a million studies, reports, and anecdotes about how terrible cops are in regards to DV issues and interactions with survivors. There are also terrifying numbers about the % of cops that are DV abusers.
So you'll be pleased to hear that to qualify for this team, cops have to receive NO additional training. Zero. There's not even the vibe check they do for the other programs.
They say that cops get on the job training. But what does this look like in the field? Survivors are made to interact with these untrained cops who are supposed to offer the opportunity to talk to an advocate.
The cops are positioned as the superior to the advocate they're supposedly being trained by who is not involved until deep into this process. Survivors are basically forced to advocate to cops for their own access to the advocate!
A huge thing to note here is neither of these are at any point UNARMED responses. With both SMART and DART, patrol officers are first sent to the scene and then *sometimes* they'll request the teams.
These teams always include ARMED police officers. SOMETIMES include advocates. And with DART, the survivor has to tell the cops they want to speak to an advocate. THESE PROGRAMS SUCK.
As a reminder, the cops ADMITTED they're not the ones that should handle these calls. Then why are they angling to expand these programs? And why do they keep extending how long it'll take to create actual unarmed response programs? $$$.
Defund the police at every turn, via every avenue, every time. That needs to be the message to city council and we cannot back down when they act like these fake alternatives are the answer.

Just did a quick read of "Diversity with Equity" which "scrutinizes two complimentary issues: diversity and pay inequity among city employees of different ethnicities, specifically pointing out the lower pay earned by employees of color, and women of color most of all." (thread)
Nearly 73% are PoC, and the proportion of black employees exceeds that of the city’s population
81% percent of women are PoC
Black women earned 25% less than the average gross salary
White men earned 21% more than the average
Of the 100 highest paid City employees, 2 were women.
So black people are overrepresented yet severely underpaid. The city is saying we'll hire you! As long as we can save money by paying you unfairly! You'll never guess which department is about proportional to black people and overrepresented by white people. LAPD!

Today @kcrw had a meeting to discuss @cerisecastle's appearance on @thelapod. If you haven't listened to it yet, the interview starts around 1:04:22. Because I am smart and everyone hates them, I have a recording of their meeting lmao. (thread)
thelapod.com/episode/roomke…
So right away let me say 3 things coming down the pipeline according to this meeting
1.) They've decided not to extend the #MyBlackLA project
2.) They've decided to deny all allegations and call @cerisecastle a liar
3.) Drew Tewksbury has resigned
.@benoonbenoon admits that structural racism exists then says, "The comments, the allegations, contain many statements of things that are factually incorrect." So yes, racism exists. But you're out of your black ass mind if you think anyone at KCRW has ever done it.

Yesterday I read @nithyavraman's thread on her controversial yes vote on Times Mirror Square, a luxury housing project connected to the notoriously corrupt former CM Huizar. The towers will have more than 1,100 units. 24 will be moderate-income units and 10 low-income units.
I've only now watched the video of the meeting. If I'd watched just the video, I probably would have thought maybe this was a mistake (given the question asked). But then they dropped the thread justifying the vote which plants this pretty firmly as a choice in my eyes.
Both a mistake and a choice can be apologized for. But after making a bad choice and catching flack for said choice, what do politicians usually do? Double down. And that's exactly what happened with someone we hoped this wouldn't be the case with.

If you didn't know, @davidryu4u (running for City Council in LA) called @GroundGameLA an extremist group that promotes hate and violence. I can't express to you how serious it is to have an elected official say something like this. (thread)
These sorts of claims against community-led groups, historically, have emboldened cops, the FBI, & sometimes just random ass people to harass, infiltrate, surveil, and/or MURDER people. A supposed progressive Dem (his words, not mine) invoking this sort of attack is significant.
I realize some of you may not know what @GroundGameLA is. We are a grassroots group connecting communities with resources, recourse, and organizing strategies. We fight for systemic change and empower people to join that fight in whatever way they can. groundgamela.org/our-mission

Today LAPD chose to arrest someone for trying to stop a crime instead of...you know...stopping the crime. When I arrived, a man who identified himself as Dean was next to a locked U-Haul that had been loaded with the belongings of an unhoused man who was not present.
He said he was told by his employer to do so. Clearly he was trying to do his job. However, it's obvious that taking belongings that don't belong to you & that you were not told to collect by the owner, is stealing. Committing a crime cuz your boss told you isn't a valid defense.
It was explained to Dean that he was taking someone's belongings and he did not have the right to do so. We asked him to unlock the truck so we could unload it. He then called the cops. Eventually they rolled up with several cars. 4-6 I would say and like ten officers.

I know that America has trained you to think you can solve any problem with more capitalism but buying stamps is not what's going to ensure a fair election. Hate to break it to you but we never have fair elections. Suppression & disenfranchisement is a constant reality. (thread)
I think it's in our best interest to focus on things we can organize around to ensure a better (still not fair) election and take some comfort in knowing concerns about the post office disappearing have been around for years and it's still here.
These are results from pre-2016 election about how we need to save the post office: google.com/search?biw=124…
