Prev tweet. This language thing fascinating. When you do transliteration of “Onion” from Arabic to English you get ‘basal’/ ‘basala’/ ‘al-basal’
Hausa lang. borrowed it almost intact as ‘Albasa’
Yoruba borrowed it as ‘Alubosa’ (cos Yoruba likes splitting consonants with vowels)
No doubt Yoruba did quite a bit of borrowing from Arabic and Hausa.
Where Yoruba has a clear lending edge is in words that have to do with partying and merrymaking lol. Hence why ‘Owambe’ and ‘Aso-Ebi’ have become universal ‘Nigerian’ language 😀
MD @nigerianports, @hadizabalausman on Channels Sunrise now, speaking about port decongestion efforts. The new electronic call-up system, ETO launches on Saturday Feb 27.
The plan is for the electronic call-up system for trucks to work in conjunction with a network of approved Truck Parks (8 approved so far).
.@hadizabalausman: There will be glitches and teething issues in the deployment of the electronic call-up system, but we must start. We will address the issues as they arise.
Last Thursday, @NigeriaGov and Siemens AG signed contract for the pre-engineering phase of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). Recall that the FGN payment was approved last year. FGN has set up an SPV known as the FGN Power Company to work with Siemens to implement.

The revamped PH—Maiduguri Line will have the following additions constructed:
#KanoMaradiLine is a standard gauge rail line; contractor is Portuguese firm, MOTA-ENGIL; cost is ~$1.9 billion.
This is the route: Kano-Danbatta-Kazaure-Daura-Mashi-Katsina-Jibiya- Maradi (Niger Republic) - 284km length — plus a 94km branch line to Dutse in Jigawa State.
Minister of Transportation @ChibuikeAmaechi has just been a guest of @seunokin on Channels. Lots of interesting things said about rail and ports. Let me share the ones I can remember
The $1.9bn Kano-Katsina-Maradi Line which will be flagged off this week (groundbreaking) by PMB is one of Nigeria’s strategic attempts to position itself to take advantage of Niger’s landlocked status. The line will connect from Kano to the Apapa Port in Lagos.
According to him, the financing being negotiated will come mostly from Europe.
Also, he says Maradi, the terminus of the line, is only 20km from the Nigerian border. Plan is for Maradi to have an Inland Port Complex that will process goods coming from or going to Apapa Port.
