It's easy, of course, to sneer at QAnon people when they say stupid things.

And some of them ARE remarkably uninformed about how the world works.

Here's the thing, though: *everyone* is vulnerable to the same kind of thinking they engage in, even professors.
So you or I might think, "Ah, I could never be THAT ignorant!" -- and sure, maybe you couldn't. Maybe you DO know more about life than PatrQT1717 or whatever.

But you are *absolutely* capable of being wrong and then doubling down, & doing it again and again. That's very human.
I have a book called "The Osiris Complex" that... well, the author is a psychiatrist, and he THINKS it's about how he was able to see the truth of Satanic Ritual Abuse and (what was then called) Multiple Personality Disorder.

(Also: ping @abbieasr -- get the book, it's so good)
But you know what it's *really* about?

It's about the pivotal moment in his life: the time when he, a few weeks into his first job, *absolutely* got snowed under by a con artist who claimed she had MPD and THAT was why she passed bad checks w/different names in different cities.
Most people would respond to that by saying, "Aw, dang, I DID get fooled there, huh? Ah, well. Happens to the best of us."

His supervisors *urged* him to respond like that. Learn your lessons, right? Move on with your life.

But our dude here *doubled down*.
Our guy dug and kept on digging -- hit bedrock and rented some construction equipment.

He developed DEEPLY unhealthy relationships with a whole bunch of patients, insisting that they'd been ritually abused and had MPD and were in imminent danger from the Cabal.
Was there any evidence to support their SRA claims? In his view, it wasn't his job to find out. (Which is true.)

It was only his job to *believe* them. (Which is not true, of curse; his job was to *treat* them.)

Was there really a Cabal that was after them? Sure. He believed.
And this must have been a huge relief to his patients, right? And it must have met HIS emotional needs, too -- he was this heroic, world-saving figure to them. He was the doc who believed.

Only here's the thing. His patients weren't getting better. They were getting much worse.
People would come to him with fairly standard-sounding complaints, and he'd interpret this as a sign of SRA and repressed memories and the whole nine yards,

and later on he'd casually reveal that ten years later he was still seeing her 2x a week, and she had 40 personalities.
This man was absolutely *burning down* people's lives, leaving a trail of debris almost unimaginable -- like, without question just making the whole world worse by living in it -- & he was *entirely convinced* he was helping the patients

And why? Because he chose to double down.
Don't be that person.

You WILL double down on a mistake *sometimes*, of course. It's a normal human behavior.

But don't wrap your whole life around it, when you do. Just 'fess up and learn from your mistakes.

Think how much happier that doc & his patients & their families...
Hell, think how much better *hundreds of real human lives* would be if that doctor -- way back when he was just a little newbie who'd never seen a psychopath before -- had listened to his supervisors and gone: "Welp. You live and learn!"

Do THAT.

You'll be happier.

I promise.

Quick book rec:

@ArkadyMartine's "A Memory Called Empire."

I would almost never recommend a Kindle book this pricy (and libraries ARE a thing), but folks, it is worth every penny.

Will do an actual review later (off topic? Wildly! Can you stop me? No!)

amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07C7B…
Also: while writing that tweet, I was delighted to find out that @ArkadyMartine is a Byzantinist.

Partly 'cause it means I might someday get to see her gloss on one of my favorite historical figures, Basil I.

Partly 'cause I hope she and @HNTurtledove are pals.

But mostly...
Her close study of how the Byzantine empire worked has clearly informed her *fictional* empire, and helped her build a world where -- and this is really the heart of her achievement -- the culture she spends most of her time writing about *works like an empire does*.

Been a while since I hammered this point home, and I have a bunch of new followers.

So: Q's basic storyline was already VERY familiar to 4chan users, because they'd been telling themselves *some* version of Q's story for years.

Here's an anon in 2/2017:

archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/113…
According to this anon, writing roughly 8 months before Q's first appearance, the CIA was waging a shadow war against President Trump on behalf of "globalists," to "protect the Pizzagate ring."

But Trump was fighting back with help from anons and the online far right in general.
Trump's victories included:

"- FBI has finished Flynns investigation and found nothing wrong.
- Pizzagate still going strong, new findings on Podesta...
- Hundreds of Child Sex Rings being dismantled by the FBI the past 2 weeks
- Soros under financial investigation," aaaaand...

I've kept out of the Great State Debate until now, but COME ON.

Hilary's position was: "that MIGHT be a Nazi symbol. But you know what's DEFINITELY true? Yesterday. US Rep. Paul Gosar spoke at an event staged by Holocaust Denier Nick Fuentes™. Today, CPAC let him speak anyway."
And people responded to THAT by calling her a Nazi?

Hey, y'all, instead of debating the stage, we really COULD be talking about actual literal undeniable fascist shit happening right across the street from CPAC.

Here are some choice quotes from Holocaust Denier Nick Fuentes™:
After the El Paso shooting, Fuentes said: "The easiest way for Mexicans to not get shot and killed in Walmart is for them to not fucking be here."

I resisted reading this article for Reasons(tm).

I was wrong. It's fantastic.

This is MTG as she truly is: a serial fabulist, deeply insecure--the type of person who described herself as a "Public figure" in a bio *long* before she really was one

politico.com/news/magazine/…
And deeply, deeply into conspiracy theories before she got into Q.

Once she *was* following Q, she was DEEP into the lore. I've talked a bit lately about the centrality of Obama / North Korea in Q's early storyline.

Here she is writing in 6/2018. This is a committed follower.
But QAnon isn't the most notable thing about Taylor-Greene. Fascism is.

Her desire to simply reshape reality to fit the claims of one man -- godlike, infallible -- who guides the Nation & its People as their only true representative -- is the ONLY thing missing from this piece.

Here, a 4chan LARPer explains their thought process:

LARPers (or, as this anon of course had to claim, actual insiders who wanted to leak) "want you to take us seriously," so "we try to be super thorough and legitimize our credibility via accuracy."

archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/135…
2/4 But "I think some people try to give too precise of a timeframe which can bite them in the ass, but only because /pol/ demands it. This is why I try not to back myself into narrow timeframes and specific dates" -- because even if you DID have legit info, the news cycle...
3/4 ... would make it hard to know in advance when your Definitely Real Information would be publicly reported.

"But Origins," you say, "how do you know this is a LARPer and not a real leaker?"

Well, mostly I'm playin' the odds, but PARTLY I'm reading the rest of their posts.

Remember how South Dakota's attorney general killed a man in a hit-and-run? Reporter @AJZionts has interrogation tapes. WILD to see the mix of kid-gloves treatment & standard interrogation tactics here.

P.S. Read *past* the part where it says he was reading conspiracy-theory BS.
Would highly recommend you read that whole thread, but at the VERY LEAST get down to post 34. (Yes, you may scoff and go "WHO HAS TIME?", but... read at least that far. Just trust me on this.)
OH, THIS IS SOME BULLSHIT.

He was charged with *three misdemeanors????*

THE VICTIM'S FACE WAS THRU HIS GODDAMNED WINDSHIELD. HE WAS ON THE PHONE READING SOME KIND OF BIDEN-CHINA CONSPIRACY THEORY WHEN HE HIT THE VICTIM, WHO WAS ON THE SHOULDER, NOT THE ROAD ITSELF.

Bull. Shit.
