New: @amyklobuchar tells me she supports ending filibuster to pass For the People Act
"we have raw exercise of political power going on where people are making it harder to vote & you can’t let that happen in a democracy because of old rules in Senate” motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
HR1 would be largest expansion of voting rights since passage of Voting Rights Act in 1965:
-Automatic & Election Day registration
-2 weeks early voting
-Expand vote by mail
-Stop voter purging
-Independent redistricting
-Public financing elections
Dems can eliminate filibuster to pass HR1 & John Lewis Voting Rights Act to stop GOP voter suppression
Or they can allow GOP to undermine democracy for next decade
Stakes couldn't be higher
.@amyklobuchar calls GOP assault on voting rights "the defining issue of the year"
"We had an insurrection at Capitol with rioters trying to literally dismantle our democracy. The fundamental issue is do people get to vote or not?"
253 bills introduced by GOP to restrict voting rights in 43 states in 2 months underscores why it's so important for Dems to pass HR1 to stop voter suppression
"It’s a question of existential survival for Democrats and democracy writ large" says @AJentleson
"Will Dems really allow the filibuster-itself an anti majoritarian relic of Jim Crow-to constrain them from using their power to defend voting rights & majoritarian features of democracy even as Republicans undermine them?"
If Dems don't pass #HR1 & John Lewis Voting Rights Act, GOP will take back power in 2022 & 2024 through anti-democratic tactics like gerrymandering & voter suppression
"Much of what HR 1 is trying to do is restore majority rule in America" says @RepSarbanes
After For the People Act passes House tonight, first Senate hearing will be on March 24
68% of Americans support HR1 but 0 House Republicans voted for it
This is biggest problem in American politics right now: GOP has no interest in appealing to majority of Americans & instead doubles down on anti-democratic tactics to hold power motherjones.com/politics/2021/…

Breaking: Georgia’s GOP-controlled House passes new voter suppression bill #HB531 cutting weekend voting, restricting mail ballot drop boxes, adding voter ID for mail ballots, giving voters less time to return ballots & dramatically limiting runoff time after Dems won in Nov/Jan
"Georgia is ground zero for the GOP’s escalating war on voting, targeting the voting methods that were used most by Democratic voters in 2020 and which contributed to flipping the state blue and electing two Democratic senators" motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
Dems have a clear choice: they can get rid of filibuster to pass John Lewis Voting Rights Act & For the People Act to stop GOP voter suppression
Or they can allow GOP to undermine democracy for next decade
Republicans on Georgia’s Senate Ethics Committee just voted to repeal automatic voter registration, which 5 million of state’s 7.6 million voters used to register. More egregious voter suppression in Georgia
Georgia Senate Ethics Committee also voted to repeal no-excuse absentee voting, which 1.3 million people used in 2020, including 450,000 Republicans. Republicans trying to undo everything in state that makes it easy to vote ajc.com/politics/senat…
Press releases from Brad Raffensperger brag that Georgia has “gold standard" trifecta of automatic voter registration, early voting & no excuse absentee voting
67% of Americans support raising minimum wage to $15 hour but it can be filibustered by 41 GOP senators representing just 21% of country. This is why we need to abolish it
Abolish the filibuster
US Senate ridiculously undemocratic:
-split 50-50 but Dems represent 41 million more people
-15 states with 38 million people elect 30 GOP senators
All across country Republicans weaponizing Trump’s lies to make it harder to vote. This is one of most disgusting things I’ve ever seen & underscores why Dems must urgently pass John Lewis Voting Rights Act & For the People Act to stop voter suppression motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
253 new voting restrictions introduced in 43 states so far this year finds @BrennanCenter
Dems can keep Jim Crow filibuster & allow GOP to pass explosion of Jim Crow 2.0 laws
Or they can eliminate filibuster & pass John Lewis Voting Rights Act & For the People Act
Voter suppression bills introduced by Georgia Republicans:
-ends Sunday voting when Black churches do Souls to Polls
-ends no excuse mail voting used by 1.3 million in 2020
-requires witness signature AND photocopy of ID for mail ballots
Georgia Senate Republicans just introduced sweeping new voter suppression bill that repeals no-excuse absentee voting & requires witness signature + photocopy of voter ID for mail ballots. This is really ugly
1.3 million Georgians voted by mail in 2020, including 450,000 Republicans, but under new GOP bill you can only vote by mail if out of town, disabled, over 65, religious holiday or can't get off work. This is extremely restrictive legis.ga.gov/api/legislatio…
The bill requires a witness signature for mail ballots, which only a dozen states mandate AND a photocopy of voter ID, which requires access to copier or printer. Ridiculous
