In the below tweet thread I had shown how India had the edge over China on land and air. But I had not covered the naval dimension.

Many have asked me to do so. Here goes

PLAN has 60 odd subs of which 35 are modern and capable of blue water ops. We have 13 odd which are available for Ops

2. 🇨🇳 subs can come into our waters via the Mallaca Straits. Its a 2700 nautical mile one way journey and the channel very narrow and just 25 mt deep

So PLAN subs will to surface while transiting the channel. They will be picked up by ISR assets very easily and tracked till they dive. Yes we are very short of ASW heptrs and can barely manage 08 but we do have 9 P8I a/c and can certainly hunt them at Mallaca straits.

3. They can chose come via Sunda starits but that is similar depth and we can choke that too. It also adds another 500 nautical miles to the journey. They can try Lumbok straits but that means a 4500-5000 nautical mile journey ie almost 20 days just to reach the theatre. Nuc

4. Only option for PLAN is to come into our waters in peace time before hostilities are declared and build up a substantial presence and then declare war. They will also

have to arrange bases to operate from like Gawdar, Karachi, for example. Because they simply cannot sustain significant ops without this

5. PLAN has significant issues with staffing their ships, boats with experienced crew. Trg, competence of PLAN is low. Worse than PLA

6. Indias biggest weaknesses are shortage Towed Array Sonars (we have only 6 instead of 25 needed), ASW heptrs and of course submarines. PLAN can sneak in 4/5 subs before hostilities start, base them at Karachi and then harras our fleet. We simply do not have the ASW assets

to guard Mallaca and Sunda straits and protect our fleet from Karachi based Chinese subs at the same time. PAK is also building sub capabilities via 🇨🇳 help

7. In that scenario our best bet is to attack Chinese merchant shipping. That will hurt 🇨🇳 lot. No Gandhian nonsense
