Infrastructure Updates #Nigeria:

FEC this week approved change of scope of 375km Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway project from rehabilitation to full reconstruction (2 lanes per side).

Next week: Flag-off of #PortHarcourtMaiduguriRail revamp (Nigeria’s Eastern Rail Corridor).
Look out for a call for Expressions of Interest (EoI) for @FMWHNIG’s Highway Development & Management Initiative (HDMI). A new @NigeriaGov scheme to get the private sector to invest in road maintenance and management. Phase 1 comprises 12 routes across Nigeria, totaling ~2,000km.
Find out more about the HDMI here (it’s a PPP so oversight belongs to @icrcng) icrc.gov.ng/fg-to-concessi…

Prev tweet. This language thing fascinating. When you do transliteration of “Onion” from Arabic to English you get ‘basal’/ ‘basala’/ ‘al-basal’

Hausa lang. borrowed it almost intact as ‘Albasa’

Yoruba borrowed it as ‘Alubosa’ (cos Yoruba likes splitting consonants with vowels)
No doubt Yoruba did quite a bit of borrowing from Arabic and Hausa.
Where Yoruba has a clear lending edge is in words that have to do with partying and merrymaking lol. Hence why ‘Owambe’ and ‘Aso-Ebi’ have become universal ‘Nigerian’ language 😀
