In the spirit of "learning In public", I’m tracking my TikTok learnings in this thread.
🧵👇
🪡 Stitched videos on TikTok
Created my first stitched video. All previous videos received views immediately, but this stitched video still has 0 views after one hour.
The algorithm must give lower priority to this type of content.

The video I stitched was a month old, that could be the reason for algorithm punishment.
Will need to try a future stitched video with something more recent to see if that makes a significant difference.

4 hours later and still 0 views. I’m going to make the video private to take it off my profile.
Clearly stitching old videos = not worth it!
💬 Subtitles on TikTok
A lot of viewers watch with the sound off, so subtitles are really important.
TikTok also uses the text from manually created subtitles to help with algorithm placement, so while there are cool subtitle generation apps, they may affect your placement.
Added a new video today and got views right away (up to 370 after an hour), confirming that my previous issue was isolated to the month-old stitched video and not some issue with my account.
Phew! 😌
Tried using an auto-caption generator to test the theory that adding captions inside the app increases reach.
The theory is that TikTok uses the caption text to determine who to share your video to, and can only read captions created inside the app.
Video certainly appears to be getting less views than related videos.
After 6 hrs I’m at 1300 views. Most of my videos have at least double that by this point.
I have a video I’ll release the same time tom. that has in-app captions so I can see if there’s an obvious difference.
The like ratio for this video is about 18% which is in the same wheelhouse as other videos so I have decent confidence that the perceived “quality” should be similar to the algorithm, making the lack of in-app captions the most obvious differentiator.

You are afraid your ideas will be stolen, or that you will look foolish. You don’t realize it, but have let fear take control of the steering wheel.
Don’t be driven by your fear.
Here are 5 reasons you should be building in public.
🧵👇
1. Build trust
Because you share your failures, you show your audience that you are an open book and aren’t just trying to sell them.
2. Build your status
Because you share your process, people will associate your name with someone that builds products. When an expert in the field is needed, your name will be top of mind.
