This is a question A LOT of people have been asking: Why Narrow Gauge for Eastern Corridor?
HM @ChibuikeAmaechi has now answered it. There’s plan for a 1,500km Standard Gauge Line for Eastern Corridor (PH-Maid), but while funding is being sought, Narrow Gauge is being revamped.
- The #PortHarcourtMaiduguriRail (1,443km) revamp will be Cofinanced by a syndicate of Chinese lenders, with FGN counterpart funding.
- Deep Sea Port and Railway Industrial Park will be funded by a Direct investment from CCECC, at a cost of $700m.
.@CCECC8 MD: #PortHarcourtMaiduguriRail and Deep Sea Port and Railway Industrial Park project will generate 10,000 jobs during construction and 5,000 permanent jobs when operational.
WILT: @CCECC8 was once the Foreign Aid Department of China’s Ministry of Railways. It was as Foreign Aid Dept that it developed the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) Rail Line, in the 1970s.
Says revamped #PortHarcourtMaiduguriRail (with New branch lines to Owerri,Bonny,Damaturu) will be linked to existing SGR using new Transshipment Centers
Rail: 85% from lenders, FGN counterpart of 15%
Port & Park: Direct Investment by CCECC & funders
The revamped #PortHarcourtMaiduguriRail will run across 12 States and 65 LGAs. And terminate in a brand new Sea Port on Bonny Island, with a link to a new Railway Industrial Park in Port Harcourt.
In terms of industrialization, the State that has seen the most progress in the last decade has been Ogun. Industrial capital of Nigeria: Agbara, Sango-Otta, Ibafo, Mowe, Sagamu etc.
Lagos too is seeing some very interesting stuff in the Lekki Corridor: the Lekki Free Zone.

Prev tweet. This language thing fascinating. When you do transliteration of “Onion” from Arabic to English you get ‘basal’/ ‘basala’/ ‘al-basal’
Hausa lang. borrowed it almost intact as ‘Albasa’
Yoruba borrowed it as ‘Alubosa’ (cos Yoruba likes splitting consonants with vowels)
No doubt Yoruba did quite a bit of borrowing from Arabic and Hausa.
Where Yoruba has a clear lending edge is in words that have to do with partying and merrymaking lol. Hence why ‘Owambe’ and ‘Aso-Ebi’ have become universal ‘Nigerian’ language 😀
MD @nigerianports, @hadizabalausman on Channels Sunrise now, speaking about port decongestion efforts. The new electronic call-up system, ETO launches on Saturday Feb 27.
The plan is for the electronic call-up system for trucks to work in conjunction with a network of approved Truck Parks (8 approved so far).
.@hadizabalausman: There will be glitches and teething issues in the deployment of the electronic call-up system, but we must start. We will address the issues as they arise.
