It's been 49 days. 49 busy days. And yet somehow the Biden administration still has NOT reversed Trump's Executive Order that threatens sanctions, monetary penalties & imprisonment on persons who assist the ICC!
This is shameful. And so revealing.
One way to think of terrorism is that it is the peacetime equivalent of war crimes. Opposing the ICC (as Israel does, as the US has done: see the Hague Invasion Act!!!) is a clear indication that "we" are NOT opposed to terrorism at all: we want impunity for "our terrorists" 2/
The car bombing described below was conducted by the CIA, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia & Israel. It killed 80 civilians in March, 1985. There has of course never been any accountability for this crime. Nor any acknowledgement of our responsibility!!! 3/
In 1979-83 Israeli officers created & ran #terrorist group that killed hundreds of civilians in Lebanon. We have known this for 3 years. US media has remained silent about it. Meanwhile ISR insists that ICC gives SUPPORT to "terrorists & antisemites":
It is not just that "our terrorists" aren't held accountable: the very fact that we have used terrorism continues to be erased from the official record! The ICC challenges myths & lies we tell about our uses of force. This is why US passed Hague Invasion Act & Trump signed his EO
The fact that Biden needs time (!!!!) to review whether or not it should reverse Trump EO (which threatens any person who helps the ICC with fines or even prison!!!) is truly shocking. Yet, sadly, not surprising in the least... The war on terrorism is, & has always been, a sham.
Note: Declassified docs on El Salvador or Guatemala show that, since 1960s, US analysts knew US military aid was in fact going to the death squads & repeatedly referred to such actors as "terrorists." There has been ZERO accountability for these cases of US support for terrorism
Biden knows this: he was a young Senator in the 1980s, when many Democrats opposed US aid to El Salvador PRECISELY because it was going to death squad terrorists, a policy that contradicted Reagan's claim to be fighting the (first) "war on terrorism" foreignpolicy.com/2012/08/20/ter…
Biden knows this: in 1984 he took part in Senate debates about the Dodd Amendment, which would have banned any US aid to the Contras that would go towards the commission of acts of #terrorism (Republicans rejected this amendment!!) salon.com/2010/03/14/bru…
In explaining decision not to sanction MBS (MBS had a journalist murdered, ie #terrorism. SA was involved in 1985 Beirut bombing, ie #terrorism), the Biden administration argued that it needs Saudi Arabia's cooperation in the fight against #terrorism :
ICYMI: There are serious allegations that Saudi Arabia / MBS sent a "security team" to Norway that, according to Norway's Foreign Ministry, posed a threat to the life of Iyad el-Baghdadi, a strong critic of the SA regime & friend of Khashoggi dagbladet.no/nyheter/the-sa…
There are also, you might remember, allegations that MBS sent his "Tiger Squad" to Canada to try to assassinate (ie, terrorism) a former official turned critic of the regime: thestar.com/news/canada/20… But Biden won't sanction MBS because the US needs SA in its "fight vs terrorism"

A review of US counterterrorism policies is under way. We must find a way out of deadly cycle of "terrorism" & "counter-terrorism." Only way we will do so is by ending silence about "our" (US, ISR, France etc) "terrorism" & by realizing that the DISCOURSE on "T" is pure ideology

In 1985 Pollard passed on satellite pictures that were used by Israel in its bombing of PLO headquarters in Tunis (see here, from CIA's official Assessment of the Pollard Espionage Case). At the time, one US official called it an act of #terrorism! THREAD

The raid killed around 60 people, mostly civilians. On a visit to Tunisia a few weeks later, under Secretary of State John Whitehead used the term "terrorism" to refer to ("deplore") the bombing. That did not go well for him ....

As a scholar & student of terrorism, how should I feel about the fact that a member of Editorial Board of @terpolv immediately blocked me after ONE Tweet where I mentioned the role senior Israeli officers played in deadly #terrorist campaign in 1980s & US media silence about it?
I should of course note the irony of a scholar blocking me after I tweeted thread about censorship (Israeli military censor killed story that would have revealed role of senior Israeli officers in #terrorist car bombing campaign) & self-censorship (US media silence about this)
I have asked Prof. Chernov Hwang @Julie_C_Hwang to explain why she blocked me. No reply. This is SO disappointing. But, sadly, quite revealing & unsurprising when you realize the absolute SILENCE amongst US "terrorism experts" about Bergman's revelations (3 years ago now!)
