THREAD ⚠ Effective 12:01 am March 13, the Avalon region will move to Alert Level 4 and areas outside the Avalon will move to Alert level 3.
2️⃣ We must be mindful that while our provincial epidemiology is in a very good place, the same cannot be said outside the province. We therefore remain at risk of importation of the virus and the variants of concern that are now in greater circulation.
3️⃣ We saw first-hand how rapidly the B117 variant spread in our province. That’s why we must ease restrictions slowly. We will closely monitor the epidemiology as we open to ensure that there is no increased transmission.
4️⃣ We have adjusted restrictions in each level, recognizing that the COVID variants and worldwide epidemiology put us in a very different place than we were in when these levels were developed last summer.
5️⃣ While travel within the province is not prohibited, we do ask that you limit travel as much as possible. We recognize that there are activities that are beneficial for mental health such as going to your cabin or snowmobiling.
6️⃣ If you do choose to travel for leisure, go directly to your destination and be prepared with your supplies to avoid having to enter public places along the way.
7️⃣ In level 3, each household can have a maximum of 10 close, consistent contacts. This is not 10 contacts per person, it is 10 for the entire household. Remember the phrase "Tight 10."
8️⃣ Close consistent contacts are the people you interact with socially, in close proximity, for an extended period of time, on a regular basis. As we recommended at Christmas, determining who your close contacts are is a conscious, deliberate decision each household must make.
9️⃣ In Level 3, restaurants are permitted to operate for in person dining at 50% capacity, provided they can maintain 6ft between patrons seated at tables. This does not mean 6ft between tables, it is the distance between people that matters.
🔟 As #StPatricksDay approaches, it will be particularly important for restaurants to adhere to these requirements. Eating and drinking should only occur while seated. Anyone not seated must wear their mask. There should be no movement of individuals between tables. 🍀
1️⃣1️⃣ We are asking businesses to have employees work from home wherever possible, regardless of alert level. This recommendation will be in place until we have a sufficient proportion of the population vaccinated. 🏢from🏡 #WFH
1️⃣2️⃣ As a reminder for those on the Avalon, I will now go through the restrictions for Alert Level 4 ⚠ which will be in place midnight Saturday morning: (sorry for the long thread, so much to share today!) 🙏

Tomorrow marks one year since my first #covid19nfld briefing. This anniversary gives us pause to reflect on everything that has happened in the last year, both the bad and the good. We have all been impacted by this pandemic, in different ways, some of us much more profoundly.
How it started.... how it's going! (Little throw back to my first COVID update!)
❤ Despite the heartache, struggles and disappointments, we also have seen this pandemic bring out some of the best in humanity:
#IWD THREAD 🧵 Today is International Women’s Day, a day that is very near and dear to me personally. I’d like to acknowledge the remarkable women across our health care system who are working to support our COVID response.
While I may be the face of the response to the pandemic, there are thousands of women across our province who have contributed to Newfoundland and Labrador’s efforts and successes. 👩⚕️👩🔬👩🏫👮♀️👩💼
❗️ Remember, we all possess the tools and the ability to protect against this virus and stop the outbreak. The same public health measures we have been practicing throughout the year will protect us now:
😷 Your non-medical mask is a critical layer of protection for yourself and others.
Wear it whenever you are interacting with people outside your household bubble, not just indoor public spaces.
Your mask should be at least 2⃣ layers, 3⃣ is better.
👉Make sure it fully covers your nose and chin. Do not wear a face shield in place of a mask.
THREAD 🧵 We have received confirmation that the outbreak in the metro area is indeed due to a COVID-19 variant of concern, specifically the B.1.1.7 variant which was first recognized in the UK. This variant is more infectious than the original strain of SARS-CoV-2.
We have seen how rapidly it has spread in facilities elsewhere in the country. We know that if not controlled, it becomes the predominant strain within weeks of first appearance. This is concerning and serious. But we have the ability to overcome it.
We know that our greatest ally is speed. We therefore have to take quick and decisive action to reduce the spread of this variant. I am announcing that, effective immediately, I am introducing special measures orders across the province that will take us back to Alert Level 5 ⚠️
⚠️ We are increasing restrictions in the St. John's/metro area, effective midnight tonight:
➡️ Formal gatherings such as funerals, burials, weddings, and religious and cultural ceremonies are limited to 10 people, as long as physical distancing can be maintained.
Wakes and visitations are prohibited.
➡️ Private health care clinics can remain open in accordance with provincial guidelines.
1⃣ On Monday, assuming all goes well this weekend, I will be moving our #COVID19 Alert Level down to 4. Please visit gov.nl.ca/covid-19/alert… to learn more about what that means for you.
2⃣ Gatherings of 10 ppl is acceptable in Alert Level 4, but should only occur when #PhysicalDistancing is possible. The intention is to allow for small funerals, burials, weddings. This isn't a green light to host parties -- you should remain in your bubble or your #DoubleBubble.
3⃣ If you're well & not required to self-isolate, you can participate in some recreational activities. Outdoor activities, like walking, hiking, or bike riding, are encouraged as long as physical distancing can be maintained and you are not req'd to self-isolate for any reason.
