For the first time in almost 2 years, NL is not in a public health emergency because of COVID. Restrictions for mask wearing and capacity limits are gone
So what does living with COVID look like from here? Here are some common questions a šŸ§µ #covid19nfld
cbc.ca/news/canada/neā€¦
This ending is now what most people were expecting. For most of the pandemic, low covid meant low restrictions, but what happened instead is that COVID is now more contagious but less severe (largely thanks to 95% of the population being vaccinated, but also Omicron)
The ending of the health emergency doesn't mean COVID is over, in fact the chances of you catching it have almost never been higher.

What's changed is that if you do get it, you're much less likely to end up in hospital or die

A #covid19nfld šŸ§µ : Less than 24h from now, The Scienceā„¢ļø apparently changes.

Mar 13th: Proof of šŸ’‰ to keep everyone safe. Masks mandated. Lowered capacity. Dance floors ā€œpermittedā€ but you must mask while dancingā€¦

Mar 14th: No restrictions. (but šŸ’‰ Req. for work still).
Hereā€™s the same health minister @Johnrockdoc saying in *2018* that the government cannot force people to get vaccinated ā€œRegardless of how beneficial vaccines are to public health,ā€ because of the Charter. Little bit of a flip-flop there, hey?
Hereā€™s a summary of a briefing from February by @PeterCBC, in which our @PremierofNL (whoā€™s also an MD) stated that the vax pass will remain in place if it ā€œalters behaviour and encourages people to get boosted.ā€ To make the ā€œright choice.ā€ Medicine is a one size fits all now.

Yes we're having more deaths, because we're having A LOT more cases

March 2020-December 2022:
-2,000 cases
-18 deaths
(so 1 in 110 cases was fatal)

Dec 2022-present
- 20,000 cases
- 45 deaths
(1 in 444)
#covid19nfld
A couple things to keep in mind, the number of cases since December is actually a lot more than 20,000 (since not everyone can get a PCR test), which means the death rate is actually lower than 1 in 444
Why has COVID become less deadly? Yes the more mild nature of Omicron is one reason, but most people getting COVID now is vaccinated, which has left them better protected from hospitalization and death #covid19nfld

I'm anticipating a lot of these types of questions. They're leaving it up for people to decide. It seems to be a two part test:
1. Did you have to go to work, even at alert level 5?
2. Did you interact with the public?

If you answered yes to those two, book your shot
Here's the link from Eastern Health to book your shot if you're " first responders and frontline essential workers, specifically those who have had direct contact with the public during Alert Level 5, who cannot work from home, and who are 16 and older"
portal.healthmyself.net/nleasternhealtā€¦
If you're wondering if you qualify consider the reasoning. They want to target people who are at higher risk because even in a huge spike in cases, they still have to go to work and interact with people, or if you got sick critical services like power and water shut down

Tomorrow marks one year since my first #covid19nfld briefing. This anniversary gives us pause to reflect on everything that has happened in the last year, both the bad and the good. We have all been impacted by this pandemic, in different ways, some of us much more profoundly.
How it started.... how it's going! (Little throw back to my first COVID update!)
ā¤ Despite the heartache, struggles and disappointments, we also have seen this pandemic bring out some of the best in humanity:

How is NL doing on the vaccine roll out? Let's take a look at the numbers.
When it comes to doses received per capita, we're on par with most provinces, at about 5,000/100k people
But more of our vaccine is sitting in freezers than most 1/ #covid19nfld
Of the 24,000 doses received in NL, 16,500 have been administered, that's 67% of doses used. The only province worse is NS (58%). Saskatchewan has administered 104% of their doses (because they've extracted extra using special syringes) #covid19nfld
NL has been holding back second doses in freezers (other provinces haven't), so 4,232 doses are reserved for that, but that leaves 3,700 doses in freezers that aren't accounted for that could be administered #covid19nfld

1/8 Some thoughts on the mess in the #NLVotes

First - not an insignificant number of people - including seniors, those with literacy challenges and those who live in rural areas will be disenfranchised by this decision. I expect precedent setting litigation #covid19nfld
2/8 Weak seams in democracy appear where least expected

Like when you vote in šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ you first speak to a little old lady or bored undergrad who hands you a ballot & crosses off your name in a little book

If poll workers are too scared to work entire electoral process stops working
3/8 With hindsight there is hubris in @FureyAndrewā€™s decision to call this vote. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians donā€™t have a magic power that repels the virus

A lesson for šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦, too If Trudeauā€™s vaccine crisis hadnā€™t already cooled his ardour for a spring election, this may have

Things aren't great right now but we should all breathe deeply for a minute: Here's a thread about the current #covid19nfld outbreak that nobody has asked for. My turn to shout (while masked) into the (distanced) void.
To begin, I take the current outbreak very seriously & hope you do too. Follow the @CMOH_NL 's advice and guidance. Things aren't exactly great ATM, but by following her guidance, we've done well. I haven't always understood every decision but I've always followed her advice.
We had a close-to-normal life since summer. We CAN & WILL get back there soon. AND, I understand that fear and stress elevate once kids are involved. So I certainly don't want to come off as preachy or like I'm sitting in judgement of someone who's nervous AF right now. I get it.

THREAD šŸ§µ Here are some key take-aways from my #COVID19 update today. We are relying on the best available information and we are gradually taking steps to relax some of the guidelines in low-risk environments and begin to live with COVID-19 in our communities. #covid19nfld
2āƒ£ COVID-19 is here. It is in our communities and unfortunately will be a part of our daily lives until a vaccine is available. We need to live life with the threat of COVID-19 around us.
3āƒ£ More businesses, services and activities will resume only when they can be delivered safely and within the public health guidelines.
