One year ago today, #COVID19 was characterized as a pandemic by @DrTedros.
This followed the declaration in January 2020 of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the highest level of alarm 🚨 under international law.
By that time, WHO was already working closely with countries, sharing life-saving information on how to prepare and protect their people against #COVID19.
WHO sent lifesaving supplies & equipment & reached billions of people around the 🌏🌍🌎 with vital information about how to protect themselves from #COVID19.
WHO and partners have worked with scientists, donors and manufacturers from across the globe to speed up the development of vaccines against #COVID19.
In December 2020, WHO issued its first emergency use validation for a #COVID19 vaccine and stressed the need for equitable global access. #VaccinEquity
Thanks to support & contribution from donors & partners, WHO is helping countries around the 🌏🌍🌎 fight the #COVID19 pandemic and ensure #VaccinEquity for all.
Over 150 countries participate in the #COVAX Facility, the #COVID19 vaccine global access facility designed to guarantee rapid, fair & equitable access to life saving vaccines for every country in the 🌐, rich & poor, to halt the spread of COVID-19. 👇 bit.ly/38viG4Q
Nearly 3⃣0⃣ million doses of #COVID19 vaccines have already been shipped to 3⃣7⃣ economies through the #COVAX Facility. #VaccinEquity
WHO today listed the #COVID19 vaccine developed by Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), for emergency use in all countries and for COVAX roll-out bit.ly/2OIy0nE
The #COVID19 vaccine from Janssen is the first to be listed by WHO as a single dose regimen, which should facilitate vaccination logistics in all countries bit.ly/2OIy0nE
The emergency use listing procedure assesses the suitability of novel health products during public health emergencies - to make 💊,💉 & 🧪 available as rapidly as possible to address the emergency, while adhering to stringent criteria of safety, efficacy & quality.
"As countries roll out #COVID19 vaccines, WHO is continuing to keep a close 👀 on their safety.
WHO is aware that some countries have suspended the use of AstraZeneca vaccines, based on reports of 🩸 clots in some people who received doses of the vaccine from 2 batches"-@DrTedros
"This measure was taken as a precaution while a full investigation is finalised. It's important to note that the @EMA_News has said there is no indication of a link between the vaccine & 🩸 clots & that it can continue to be used while its investigation is ongoing"-@DrTedros
We are monitoring new virus variants closely. We work with researchers, health officials & scientists to understand how they affect the virus’ behavior, including their impact on #COVID19 vaccines.
🆕data shows that violence against women remains devastatingly pervasive & starts alarmingly young. Across their lifetime, 1⃣ in 3⃣ 👧🧕👩 are subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence from a non-partner.
Violence against women starts early: 1⃣ in 4⃣ young women (aged 15-24 years) who have been in a relationship will have already experienced violence by an intimate partner by the time they reach their mid-twenties.
Let's #endVAW!
Intimate partner violence is by far the most prevalent form of violence against women globally, affecting around 641 million women 👩 and girls 👧 around the 🌎🌍🌏
"I would like to thank @UN_Women for their partnership through our joint programme to improve data globally on violence against women, and I would also like to thank the 🇬🇧 for the funding it provides for this work"-@DrTedros#EndViolence
As the 🌍🌏🌎 starts the largest vaccine roll-out against #COVID19, WHO, @UNICEF & partners are helping countries develop simulation exercises to prepare for vaccine arrival and deployment.
