The American Rescue Plan - passed by Congress and signed by @JoeBiden will bring badly needed relief to millions of families and begin the long road of recovery from the pandemic.
But both the process and the end product reveal a lot about the state of American governance.
1) The ARP is not enough to meet the scale of the pandemic after nearly a year of government inaction, and was weakened by misguided attempts at bipartisanship.
We need to see continued expansions of our social safety net and further policies that benefit workers.
2) The pandemic has only exacerbated existing cracks in our economy.
Hopefully, many of the anti-poverty programs will be made permanent, creating a more comprehensive social safety net that catches people and prevents them from falling into poverty or homelessness.
3) The process of passing the ARP should make one thing crystal clear: Republicans are utterly unwilling to work in good faith with Democrats.
Not a single Republican voted to pass the American Rescue Plan. If Republicans won't support direly needed (and popular) relief...
...there is no realistic path to getting Republican votes on other urgent matters like the climate crisis, or secure voting rights against the attacks on democracy that they themselves are pushing forward at the state level.
As we mark the halfway point of Biden's first 100 days in office, Democrats have a choice to make: they can attempt to work with Republicans in vain or they can use their power to meaningfully improve peoples’ lives.
It's that simple a choice.
Passing bills on a majority-rule basis - like the ARP - is the way to continue to help struggling Americans and build lasting political capital.
Seeking Republican cooperation is building a bridge to nowhere.
The need to abolish the filibuster has never been more evident.
That's what we're fighting for, and you can be a part of that fight!
In 2009, @BarackObama took office under rather similar conditions to @JoeBiden. The prior administration had completely failed to respond to a crisis. The economy was diving into the worst recession since the Great Depression.
How did Mitch and the GOP embrace "bipartisanship"?
“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president”
- Mitch
“We're going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”
Good! Until the Republican Party deal with those in their own ranks who incited an attempted coup, who spread anti-semitic conspiracy theories, and who say Democratic politicians should be EXECUTED, The Democrats shouldn't even be reaching out to them.
One Republican member of Congress in particular peddles theories about the California wildfires being started by Jewish space lasers, says Democratic politicians should be executed, and thinks mass shootings like Parkland and Sandy Hook were staged.
Today @JoeBiden announced that he is committing to a historic society-wide mobilization to stop the climate crisis, create millions of good jobs, and roll back centuries of systemic environmental racism.
Many of the things we have been fighting for became a reality including:
☀️Establishment of White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy and National Climate Task Force
☀️Creation of a Civilian Climate Corps modeled after the New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps to put people to work in government jobs tackling the climate crisis
☀️Commitment to a whole-of-government approach to Environmental Justice, including delivering 40% of climate investments to frontline communities
☀️Creation of Interagency working group to ensure economic development and a just transition for fossil fuel communities
Movements elected @JoeBiden. Now, it's time to make sure our demands happen. This first week of executive orders are a heartening start.
But we're not stopping there.

Representation alone is not enough. We also need the political will to fight for a better future.
Warnock's victory - while historic for being the first Black Senator from Georgia - is critical because Senate control puts survival checks on the table.
Deb Haaland's appointment as Interior Secretary is important not just for who she is, but for what she could do, and the executive orders coming out of the Biden administration are hopefully just a taste.
Heather Boushey - with her focus on people's financial well-being (and not the stock market) - is the type of voice we need in the halls of government.
We are also confident that Heather Boushey will internalize the necessity for our government to structure its work around the national project of averting the climate crisis.
