On Monday we launched our major £2 million #GCRF #UKRI peace building project. Yesterday the Govt announced cuts to international science the savagery of which has never been seen before, to make war #WDMs ⁦⁦@CMonaghanSNP⁩ ⁦@alisonthewlisstheguardian.com/uk-news/2021/m…
The savage cuts are taking immediate effect. The length, depth and consequences are as yet unknown but they will result directly in increases in poverty, violence against women & girls & the crumbling of civic cultural institutions - as our research to date shows. #ODAcuts #SDGs
#ODACuts to international science & research budget with our international partners in the global south are estimated at £125million “The MoD has said developing the next generation of Dreadnought submarines to carry the new warhead would cost £30bn plus a £10bn contingency.”
Like colleagues leading projects across U.K I am reeling - feeling full sickening, savagery of violent assault on my person, life’s work & most of all our co-workers for peace & cultural justice in south. Seeing the end of U.K global university & of science used for world healing Image
As this hits and we stagger and change and struggle and protest, as we must on behalf of those who may not, it’s vital to pause and turn to peace-holding wisdom, quiet steadying, moving from fright/flight so to #belikewater Image
This vicious, precision bureaucratic warfare. The exchange of clean water for nuclear arms, of education for women & girls for nuclear weapons that cannot keep us safe, and cannot ever make us happy. This is #necropolitics and #necroethics.
And in the face of #necropolitics - the choice of death over life in its full, mutually sustaining struggle for goodness: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman / Image

If you feel the U.K. Government’s cuts to scientific research and overseas aid should be reversed please consider signing this open letter
“The move has incensed leading researchers, who say it will erode Britain’s ability to make key contributions to improving world health and battle the climate crisis.”
Forgive me. It’s not easy to find the words when your life’s work is blown up and those to whom you have a duty of care, and a heart of love, are to be the first to suffer. thenational.scot/news/19160115.… @UofGlasgow @UofGEducation @CUSP_Network
Very good Blog by Jude Frankenstein on sinister shifts signalled away from transparency & accountability by #UKRIcuts #ODAcuts rethinkingresearchcollaborative.com/2021/03/16/wha…
“Abruptly and severely, the cuts may end hundreds of international collaborations between UK scientists and colleagues around the world working on health, climate change, disaster resilience, sustainability and many development topics.” @BBCSounds bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3…
“The British International Studies Association (BISA) & the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) strongly condemn the devastating cuts to UKRI’s Official Development Assistance (#ODA)-funded budgets for international research.”bisa.ac.uk/news/statement…
This is a strong statement from Academy of Social Sciences on #URKI #ODAcuts #GCRFcuts. As a Fellow this is a real support to those of us in Social Sciences protesting these egregious cuts. As Co-Director of @MIDEQHub, mentioned, I *know* this reaches colleagues in LMICs too
More examples coming through thick and fast on catastrophic effects of this iteration of necropolitics #UKRIcuts #ODAcuts from @adsbaird @LSEnews
This is a blisteringly brilliant blog from @hflowe on #odacuts #ukricuts and impact on her work with Rights for Time
“Our fates are interdependent &, as such, international collaboration, [...] is vital & of benefit to individuals, countries, & global community alike. unprecedented, & brutal not only counter-productive, but an impeccably ill-timed own goal.   @bmj_latest blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/03/17…

And another strong, strong 🧵 from here on impact from @MIDEQHub’s colleagues @GCRFGenderHub #ukricuts #odacuts
“In the year that UK hosts the upcoming G7 Summit and COP26, it will leave the UK out of step with global efforts to tackle grand challenges through research led initiatives.”

Development StudiesAssociation statement on #ODIcuts #ukricuts here @devcomms
“This is really violent information because we were not expecting it at all. It calls into question the longstanding relationships of trust that we have built [...] that have raised so much hope.” Dr Bonayi Hubert Dabiré @MIDEQHub Piece by @AnnaFazack1
