Thread: Blatant #ClimateDenial has lost. The new conflict is whether #ClimateChange is a crisis requiring urgent social and #economic transformation, or something we can adapt to incrementally while carrying on with business as usual. 1/40
2/ A recent opinion piece by Bjorn Lomborg in the @globeandmail is representative of the 'business as usual argument'. Let's deconstruct it to see how this gets passed off as the pragmatic point of view, and why it's false.…
3/ The basic tactic is this: provide a few common-sense truths to gain the air of pragmatism and then feed us the story we're desperate to hear: that everything will be fine, that growth will outpace #ClimateDamages and life can carry on as usual.

MULTIDIMENSIONAL POVERTY is not the new buzz word, it is the holistic approach by which the concept of #poverty is measured.

Your President
Your Governors
Your Lawmakers
Your Ministers
Your Commissioners
Your Special Advisers

...should pay attention to it

Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures #Poverty on three general dimensions:

1. Health
2. Education
3. Living Standards

These 3 dimensions are further broken down into 10 Indicators that are easily measurable.
The Ten MPI Indicators:
1 Nutrition
2 Child Mortality
3 Years of Schooling
4 School Attendance
5 Cooking Fuel
6 Sanitation
7 Water
8 Electricity
9 Floor
10 Asset

The Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs provide direction on how to implement measures to reduce poverty.

THREAD: In a new study in @nature we present a way to avoid the bias that burdens future generations and the risky strategies that current #climate change mitigation pathways suffer from.

A #climatetwitter explainer

#Fridays4Future #ClimateStrike #ParisAgreement

Existing #ClimateChange scenarios focus on reaching a target in 2100

but by doing so weirdly suggest that the best way to achieve a #climate target is to delay action first, miss it over the next decades, and then to try to make up for it later

This puts put a disproportionate burden on future generations, who:
-will suffer higher #climate impacts in their lives
-are burdened with later cleaning up the mess by actively pulling #CO2 out of the air

This strategy is very risky and can be avoided

7 states likely to meet 1st Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of eradicating poverty by 2030: Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Tripura & Uttarakhand: Niti Aayog’s SDG Index. Follow thread for insights:
22% of Indians live below the poverty line, while the SDG target involves bringing this down to 11%. States such as Goa (with 5% population below poverty line) & Kerala (7%) are among the 7 that have already fulfilled this criterion under SDG-1
29% of Indian families had a member covered by a health scheme/insurance, while the SDG target is 100%. No state has reached this target, but Andhra Pradesh with 75% & Chhattisgarh with 68% are among the 6 that have >50% coverage

With Earth experiencing hyper-fast change in human footprints, heat-trapping CO2, species mobility, energy & information tech, what the hell do you work on to boost confidence in sustainable progress? (Add deep complexity + @deepuncertainty)

Boost & spread key *capacities*. 1/3
In 2013, I proposed this shorthand for capacities to boost and spread in pursuit of #SDGs or your preferred definition of enduring human progress on a thriving planet:

Bend, stretch, reach, teach, reveal, reflect, rejoice, repeat. #DotEarth context:… 2/3
I explored this "bend, stretch, reach, teach..." menu in a @TEDx talk in Portland: 3/3

It's evolved since then. I have added the word "respect"... Wonder why..

Watch, read, react (with respect).

It was a great time at the SDG Network Ogun State Chapter International Youth Day event.

Our founder @elizabethtalatu spoke at the event on the topic "Taking Actions for the SDGs".

She spoke about 10 steps by which one can and should take actions for the #SDGs.

They include:
1. Identify an SDG you are passionate about
2. Read up on the SDG and it's indicators
3. Ask yourself "Why" you want to work on this SDG
4. Look for persons who share similar passion.
5. Develop a strategy or plan
6. Reach out to organizations to partner with
7. Implement that strategy
8. Report the activity done
9. Monitor and evaluate
10. Review the project or activity

All these steps are extremely important. We need to start monitoring and evaluating the actions we take on the #SDGs.

What are you doing to achieve the #SDGs?

2019 is the 50th edition of the #SIPRIYearbook. Join SIPRI as we celebrate the occasion with a 50-day countdown and share the history of the Yearbook over the past 50 years. Watch the introductory video with SIPRI Director @dansmith2020:
The first #SIPRIYearbook was published in 1969 with the aim ‘to produce a factual and balanced account of a controversial subject—the arms race and attempts to stop it’. The rise in world military spending and disarmament efforts, including the #NPT, take central focus.
'In whatever way the nuclear situation is examined, the inescapable feature is what enormous quantities of weapons have been amassed' – Movement towards a first-strike capability by the #US and #USSR, the #SALT talks and European security were a focus of the 1970 #SIPRIYearbook.

One of the things we discussed today in our #MRKT4201 IMC (marketing) class was ALLIES. How do we create them, where do they come from?
Perhaps my favourite tool for this is the SPECTRUM OF ALLIES model available through Beautiful Trouble 👉🏼…
I love their explanation of how this model can be used for activism 👇🏼

Proud to have given the first Presidential Lecture today at the United Nations ECOSOC.
For all its follies, the UN is one of our species greatest achievements. 1. It outlawed war and conquest as "the continuation of policy by other means," and deserves much of the credit for the decline of interstate war since 1946 and the global reduction in war deaths.
2. UN peacekeepers, though not always successful, on average keep the peace. (Here I am with my souvenir UN Peacekeeper blue helmet, posing with CBS News' Pamela Falk).

What does gender equality have to do with peace-building? a brief thread:
#UNSCR1325 calls for the inclusion of women and girls in peace-building. it recognizes that they 1) "are differentially impacted by conflict and war," and 2) play a critical (but undervalued) role in development efforts.

but not all #feminist models are created equal. different theories assert different assumptions about the intersection between gender equality, conflict, and peace-building. #GenderEquality #SDGs #PeaceBuilding

Its official...the next five years of my life will be spent as Director of a new @UKRI_News @GCRF South-South Migration, Inequality and Development Hub focusing on relationships between #migration #inequality and process of #development across 12 countries…
Migration between countries in Global South accounts for nearly half of all international migration, 70% in some places, contributing to delivery of #SDGs by creating opportunities for work and the transfer of resources, knowledge and skills. But... @Tanjabastia and others have shown, there is a relationship between #migration and #inequality. Benefits of #SouthSouthmigration are undermined by inequalities in migration opportunities and by limited and unequal access to rights for migrants and families. Meanwhile...

#FishForever had helped:
Increase fish biomass inside and outside of no-take reserves,
Empower communities and build social resilience;
Establish legal and functioning management bodies;
Fully protect 67,000 acres of coastal ocean waters;
Make progress delivering on UN #SDGs.

We're at #CEDAW71, and will live-tweet the session. Minister Frankie Campbell has introduced the delegation, thanked NGOs for contributions, and introduced The #Bahamas as the most beautiful place in the world from space (as noted by astronaut Scott Kelly).

He is now giving information about the makeup of The #Bahamas -- being an archipelago, having a Family of Islands, and dealing with increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes.

He has just mentioned that The #Bahamas was successful in its bid to join the #HumanRights Council.

Now talking about the importance of the #SDGs.
