Men and women of all social classes were wearing eyeliner as early as 6000 BC in Egypt. I buzzed my hair because I feel freer this way. And my eyeliner is more obvious 📷 @rerutled Mona in a magenta turtleneck looking at the camera

I loved my red hair, which I had for eight years. But this buzzcut is a whole new level of power, that I write about here feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-ki…
For eight years, my hair was a bright, flaming red. I dyed it red to set fire to my rage, to mould it into what I needed in order to get to the core of my being. There, I found power.

When the pandemic started, the power that my crown of flames had once given me became moot.
What good was the power of a crown of flames, during a pandemic, when I am at home all the time, effectively hiding from a virus? What was my power without that fire? How do I signal power now?
From an early age, my hair has been the site of a dance between disobedience and independence. In the confines of lockdown, I learned to liberate myself from what had once given me power so that I could fashion anew my strength. I had to shave my hair off. feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-ki…

I had men in my apartment in Cairo when I lived there. This could’ve been me. Fuck this shit. This fucking week. My family lived in Clapham for years. I used to walk across the common to get to school. Fuck this shit.
I don’t know anything about this woman who was killed for having a man in her apartment, other than it could’ve been me.

Egypt, my country of birth, is the country with the largest # of women and girls subjected to FGM which is fueled by determination to control female sexuality
So a form of resistance is to say:

I own my body.

It is my right to have sex with whomever I want whenever I want (w/their consent obvs).

It is my right to have sexual with a man/men or a woman/women. My right. Because I own my body.

That is the core of the sexual revolution

As girls and as women, patriarchy insists on owning our bodies.

Patriarchy enables and protects cis men’s sexual assaults and violence against our bodies.

I want a world in which I don’t call the police because the police don’t protect women. I don’t want to be protected. Protection is conditional. I want patriarchy to stop protecting violent cis men. I want to be free of violence. (April 2020) 🎥 @rerutled
Police do not protect everyone. Ask Black, Indigenous, women of colour, trans women, sex workers.

Police in London did this to a woman at a vigil for a woman murdered by a police officer. It esp shocks many because murdered woman & this woman are white
And remember home is not safer.

This pandemic has been a horrifying reminder, with a spike globally in intimate partner terrorism and domestic abuse

Where do you go when home is where the hurt is?
