Next up the #5 Vampire Squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) vs. the #12 Basket Star (Gorgonocephalus eucnemis) #2021MMM
Tonight's battle takes place in the depths of the West Atlantic in the Gulf of Guinea about 300 miles south southeast off the Ivory Coast #2021MMM
These depths are home to the #5 seed the Vampire Squid who's scientific names roughly tranlates as Vampire squid...FROM HELL #2021MMM
While in possession of a scary name the vampire squid is neither a vampire (it feeds on detritus) nor a squid (it's in its own order, more closely related to octopuses) #2021MMM
The other contestant in tonight's battle is the Basket Star, Gorgoncephalus eucnemis. The star's multiple arms and twisting nature evoked the ancient gorgons in its naming (img from marinespecies.org/ophiuroidea/ap…) #2021MMM
The Vampire Squid is a smallish cephalopod, averaging about a foot long, with large eyes and multiple bioluminescent spots along its body #2021MMM (Image from tolweb.org/Vampyroteuthis…)
Both of these animals feed on small bits of dead and dying animals. The Basket Star, as a bottom dweller, basically waits for it to rain hamburgers #2021MMM
The Vampire squid is more active attracting small animals with its bioluminescent pores. It creates flashes of light to attract the snacks #2021MMM
The Basket Star spends most of its time attached to the bottom. Pressure is not a problem as they have a highly calcified internal structure (fig. from link.springer.com/article/10.100…) #2021MMM
Movement however... that's not the Basket Star's strong suit #2021MMM
Our battle begins with floundering, the Basket Star struggles to find its orientation without the ground to situate itself, it feels lost, adrift #2021MMM
This thrashing draws the attention of the nearby Vampire Squid who, using its fins, moves to investigate #2021MMM
The Basket Star reaches out, trying to find some substance to orient itself, something solid in this all encompassing void #2021MMM
Mistaking the Basket Star's request for succor as an aggressive action, the Vampire Squid releases a burst of bioluminescent mucus and darts back #2021MMM
The cloud of light gives an oddly beautiful point of reference for the Basket Star as it sinks lower and lower. A marker by which it can track its descent into the icy depths and out of the tournament #2021MMM
LAST UP: Alright, alright, alright the finale is the #13 Blue Glaucus vs the #4 Black Dragonfish #2021MMM
As you might guess from the scientific names of #13 Glaucus atlanticus and #4 Idiacanthus atlanticus tonight's battle is going to take place in.... The Atlantic. Specifcally about 1000 km south west from the Azores, at a depth of 1000m #2021MMM
The Blue Glaucus is a nudibranch, which is Greek for naked lung. They are a group of marine mollusks that are like snails that have lost their shells #2021MMM
NEXT UP: the #2 Caspian Seal vs. the #15 Common Kusimanse #2020MMM
Our first battle tonight takes us to the shores of Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan where the Caspian Seal is lounging on the shore sleeping off some herring #2020MMM
The Caspian Seal is tonight's first #Dogsish combatant. Seals (and sea lions) are caniforms. The seal, weighing in at 90kg depsite being only 1.3m long is a true chonk. So much to love #2020MMM
First up tonight we have the winner of the CAT-e-GORY division: the Sea Lion against the terrible TAG TEAM twosome. Individually they are the Mongoose and the Warthog, but you know them as theeee WARRRRRGOOSE #2019MMM
Tonight's battle again features a randomly selected habitat. Let's check the machine.. and it comes up with.... Oh folks this is interesting, tonight's battle takes place in the Thorn Forests of the Deccan Plateau in the Southwest of India #2019MMM (Img wikimedia)
Next up from the JUMP JUMP division, we have the #3 seeded Spinner Dolphin hosting the #10 seed 9-banded Armadillo #2019MMM
Both have traveled through ice and fire (or at least some salt water) to get here. Well where is here? Tonight we move from Sri Lanka to the waters off the coast of the Bahamas #2019MMM
We find our little armadillo out for a swim. Sure it's not the most graceful of all swimmers, but Armadillos are actually quite adept in the water bit.ly/2CzFHn1#2019MMM
Up next we have the 5 Crab & Loggerhead Sea turtle hosting the 4 Seed Cleaner wrasse & moray eel #2019MMM
In the last round the "crabberhead" defeated the clownfish & anemone in a tragic battle, while the wrasse & eel overcame the fire coral & algae twosome #2019MMM
Tonight we find the crab swimming around the sea turtle where it's picking off small pieces of algae growing on the shell of the turtle, the warm Fijian sea bathes these peaceful mutualists #2019MMM
First up is the #1 Sea Lion vs. the #8 Small Spotted-Cat Shark #2019MMM
In the first round the Sea Lion defeated the Antlion while the Small Spotted-Cat Shark fended off the venomous stonecat in a battle of inappropriately named fishes #2019MMM
We join our contestants tonight on the shores of San Francisco where the sea lion is enjoying the attention he gets when out sunning, you know catching some rays and just trying to live its best life #2019MMM
