First up is the #1 Sea Lion vs. the #8 Small Spotted-Cat Shark #2019MMM
In the first round the Sea Lion defeated the Antlion while the Small Spotted-Cat Shark fended off the venomous stonecat in a battle of inappropriately named fishes #2019MMM
We join our contestants tonight on the shores of San Francisco where the sea lion is enjoying the attention he gets when out sunning, you know catching some rays and just trying to live its best life #2019MMM
The small spotted cat-shark however is the lower seed and thus also joins us in San Francisco - the lights are going down in the city and the sun shines on the bay #2019MMM
Now I know what you're thinking that I'm going to take the cheap way out and just have the shark suffocate b/c it's out of water. I SAY THE NAY! NO! Not tonight! Evolution is NOT going to have that tired old script roll out tonight #2019MMM
You see cat sharks have evolved an ability to be semi-terrestrial. That's right, fire up your LA Gear lights, and pump up your Reeboks because this fish is coming through your window… bit.ly/2HSU89w #2019MMM
The land shark (TooObvious.gif) is wriggling along the dock looking for some free snacks. As long as their gills remain moist they're able to survive short periods of time out of the water and can move with a walking motion bit.ly/2YgsFnM #2019MMM
Tonight the shark is cruising along looking for extra food. Many tourist areas are sources of food for wildlife and in some cases they can become dependent, and dangerous, when given free food bit.ly/2WgXS8G #2019MMM #DontFeedTheAnimals
The spotted cat-shark eats a wide array of food, so that left-over Hangertown fry (oysters and bacon in an omelet) from Tadich's is fair game to the snacking shark #2019MMM
Moving at what can only be described as a saunter the shark skitters along towards the snack #2019MMM
But at the same time the Sea Lion sees the delicious bundle of fat and protein, A full day of barking and defending its section of dock is energetically expensive and frankly, it is feeling a bit peckish #2019MMM
This lad is an absolute unit and when the sea lion moves along the dock the whole structure shudders, the cat shark picks up the pace. Air holds far less oxygen per unit than water and the wet gills are working hard to extract what it can #2019MMM (pic from @AMNH)
It's now a dead sprint, the massive sea lion galumphing down the dock, while the cat shark sprinting as fast as its anaerobic appendages can allow #2019MMM
The dock is slick with moisture from the San Francisco Fog and both competitors are having a hard time controlling their movement. #2019MMM
The cat-shark lunges, VICTORY it has reached the omelet first and starts to manipulate the food so that it can eat it. Whereas the Sea Lion tries to slow itself, but there's a whole lot of momentum to contend with #2019MMM
The Sea lion however cannot stop in time and blunders in, over and through the cat-shark. The little shark is no match for the round mound on the (diet) rebound and is crushed between the sea lion and the dock #2019MMM
The Sea lion shakes it off, literally, and picks up the shark carcass, takes it into the water, where it is ready to use the erstwhile competitor to defend its territory against kayakers #2019MMM
