A word about AZ vaccine "panic".
First thing, communication matters -and it's been dreadful.
So what are we talking about?
A (urgently needed, life-saving, efficient) vaccine has been rolled out.
At one point, an anomaly was detected 👇
Bear with me (1/n)
pei.de/EN/newsroom/hp…
Why was an anomaly detected?
The truth is *we don't know*
Does it mean AZ vaccine mustn't be used ever again?
No, that's not what it means either.
Remember? During its trials, AZ noticed an anomaly and stopped the trial for investigations. For 1 case.
eu.usatoday.com/story/news/hea…
What's happening now is the same process.
*Temporary* pause for investigating the anomaly.
What could explain this?
Do the people afflicted have a common point?
Should some people sharing that common point not be given this vaccine?
Was there a problem with a batch? (Can happen)
Asking these questions is not answering these questions -reason investigations are carried on.
It is also a possibility the anomaly is a coincidence.
The only thing we know is that we do not know
Scientifically speaking, hitting the pause button during investigations is justified
Now let's take a look at the context
Because the thing is, vaccination started.
The fastest it goes, the better.
Pausing it can also be considered ill-advised -undermines trust.
But if a batch is botched or *some* people are at risks & no action is taken -undermines trust too
So there we are. We do not know.
We do know though that panicking or claiming the vaccine is no good is not helping.
A decision was taken on the ground that potentially missing a problem would damage trust more than a pause to investigate.
The communication on this was DREADFUL.
If you have drugs in your house, look at the instructions. It tells you to report any side effects not specified already, because sometimes, the trials miss it, or a batch gets botched. It can be relevant, or not.
It doesn't mean either you should throw all of them in the trash.
Let's all take a deep breath and await for the investigation results to see if an explanation can be found for the anomaly, and if appropriate, targeted measures need to be taken.
Last note, I confirm what @jonworth says: It's not about the Brits. A lot is discussed but not that.
Hopefully that will be the end of wild allegations and click-bait headlines
To sum up: This is not an announcement of the results of the (still ungoing) investigations on an unexplained (small scale) anomaly
This addresses what measures are deemed necessary or not, and the message is: ”The EMA thinks the benefits outweigh the (potential) risk”
(More than a few U.K. citizens I suspect will be surprised to learn this is an advice, not an order: All EU countries are sovereign and free to follow or not this guidance, as they relay on their own health agencies advice. Whether or not they should and will is another question)

As Raab just confirmed -yes
”We could build a ‘screw the people, hail to profits’ alliance”
FTR it even has a name: the GFTA
”Nations respecting each others’ sovereign rights to screw their citizens”

Countries without freedom of assembly
North Korea
Egypt
United Arab Emirates
Iran
China
Cuba
Belarus
Bahrain
Russia
Saudi Arabia
Turkmenistan
...
UK (not executing the arrested, but where an assembly of one is too much already)
I can but assume Raab is refering to trade deals with countries sharing the UK's (*post-VoteLies*) values
Adding Poland
(Others are missing, eg Myanmar -don't hesitate to add)

Corrupted banana republic govt sparks outrage after its announced it’s about to pass a new law that will make any public gathering of any kind illegal -unless it pleases so-called “People’s govt“

(No, this is not an old headline about North Korea)
Please note that all gathering of any kind can be deemed illegal on the ground it may RISK to be problematic.
Any protest, even the most peaceful, is at risk of being annoying.
That is effectively a total ban on inconvenient/annoying for govt protests, aka all protests.

“Woke“ actually means “decent people caring about others and fighting inequalities“
Let’s replace the word with its meaning in the current headlines shall we?
“Victory in his war against decent people caring about others and fighting inequalities“
Aka “the BBC spirit”
“BREAKING: The format of Andrew Neil’s GB News show will include ‘decent people caring about others and fighting inequalities watch’“
As in let’s make sure these bloody do-gooders good deeds don’t stay unpunished

"I think there's like an epidemic of trans people. There are way too many of them" she says
Tbh I could do without the epidemic of hateful morons getting a platform on TV

tetu.com/2021/03/11/lem…
Note to people who have been convinced that "the trans lobby wants to erase gay people" and thus may want to endorse what this woman says
She also endorses gay conversion therapy -yes, for children.
"But how will the therapist be able to do that, in a world where homosexuality will be recognized as a sexuality like any other, and not as a pathology anymore?"
Seriously not giving bigotry a platform is a thing

I still struggle to get why commercial interests are a thing here
Just a global pandemic you know
would be a shame to call it a global emergency &mobilise all our strength -all available/buildable production capacity- against it
But hey this new technology = future bns so patents
What makes me mad is -we can do that for war
National effort, new plants popping out of nowhere -to build weapons
But apparently we can’t do the same when we’re at war with a virus killing us, only when the point is us killing each other
🤷‍♀️
Covax program is much needed and welcome, but it shouldn’t be needed.
Vaccine producing companies should be working together instead of competing against each other -globally.
It’s kind of sad we end up celebrating not being completely selfish a**es
