BREAKING: We just released our Battleground Map for the 2021-2022 election cycle! Here are the states where we have critical opportunities to protect Dem majorities, flip new chambers blue, & expand Democratic power for the future.
💙VIRGINIA HOUSE. We flipped it blue in 2019 & in Nov. 2021 it's up to us to defend it. The new Dem majority passed voting rights laws, reaffirmed reproductive choice, & became the 1st state in the South to ban LGBTQ discrimination. The GOP is desperate to regain this chamber.
💙ARIZONA HOUSE & SENATE. Dems made big progress here in the last 4 years. We’re on the cusp of a legislative majority & an independent commission will give us new maps in 2022. AZ is home to a rapidly radicalizing GOP, full of conspiracy theorists who will repel moderate voters.
💙ALASKA HOUSE. A Dem-backed bipartisan governing coalition won power in 2020, despite the GOP spending nearly half a million to stop us. They also opposed a ranked-choice voting ballot measure--which voters just passed--because they knew it would hurt Republicans next election.
💙COLORADO SENATE. Democrats flipped the chamber in 2018, & while we were able to expand our majority in 2020, our 20 to 15 seat majority is narrow. We’re not taking anything for granted in a midterm election.
💙MAINE SENATE. It flipped blue in 2018 & we grew our majority in 2020. We also just won a very competitive special election in a Collins-won district. Despite this progress, the GOP is still just 5 seats away from taking back the majority, & this chamber will be competitive.
💙MICHIGAN HOUSE & SENATE. Dems will run on fair maps here for the first time in decades thanks to independent redistricting. Dems won the state House popular vote in every election for the last 10 years, but couldn't get a legislative majority because of GOP gerrymandering.
💙MINNESOTA HOUSE & SENATE. Both chambers will be competitive in 2022. Republicans were able to make gains in the House last year & protecting our Democratic majority will be a top priority. We’ll also be fighting to flip the Senate, which is just barely controlled by the GOP.
💙NEVADA ASSEMBLY & SENATE. Republicans gained 3 seats in the Assembly last year. While the state is trending blue, the GOP held both chambers as recently as 2016, & our margins are in the single digits. We are committed to defending our majorities in both chambers.
💙NEW HAMPSHIRE HOUSE & SENATE. It's changed partisan control in 6 of the last 8 elections. Last year the GOP flipped it red. The House is the largest in the US, with 400 multi-member districts, making it hard to predict. An added challenge: the GOP will control redistricting.
💙NEW MEXICO HOUSE. Republicans flipped a seat in the House last year &, while they have a long way to go to take either majority, there will be a competitive governor’s race to drive turnout on both sides. We will prioritize protecting this critical chamber.
💙PENNSYLVANIA HOUSE & SENATE. We’ve been competing on GOP-rigged maps for 10 years. In 2022, we’re expecting better maps. It’ll be a steep hill to climb, but a gubernatorial & US Senate race will drive turnout, making the legislature competitive.
💙GEORGIA HOUSE. The state's not red, it’s gerrymandered. We’ve invested there since 2012, helping flip 12 seats in 2018, breaking the GOP supermajority, & flipping 3 more seats last year. But the GOP will try to gerrymander maps again. We’re ready to fight their bad maps.
💙IOWA HOUSE. Our efforts to retake the chamber fell short last year, but we’ve been investing in infrastructure for nearly a decade & plan to keep that up. Iowa has traditionally had nonpartisan redistricting, meaning we will likely be able to compete on fair maps.
💙NORTH CAROLINA HOUSE & SENATE. The state is aggressively gerrymandered. In 2018, Dems won the popular vote for the House but only broke the GOP supermajority. Even on bad maps, we still gained in the Senate in 2020. Cities & suburbs are trending our way--we need to invest.
💙TEXAS HOUSE. The GOP was terrified of losing, spending $10 million to hold the majority last year. While Dems weren’t able to flip the chamber, we held our gains from 2018 on gerrymandered maps. We’re working to pry this chamber from the GOP & we’re in it for the long haul.

Republicans have been very busy enacting their voter suppression agenda. Here’s a recap thread of the major developments from last week alone:
An Arizona Senate committee approved legislation to shorten the early voting period & require ballots be postmarked 5 days prior to the election. Another bill passed the Senate to implement voter ID for mail voting; 80% of the electorate used mail ballots in last year’s election.
Florida Senate Republicans advanced a bill to ban ballot drop boxes, require absentee voting requests be renewed each election year, & make it a crime to collect ballots from anyone other than a family member. The bill’s sponsor acknowledged it wouldn’t solve any known problems.

It’s #InternationalWomensDay and we are pumped to celebrate some of the incredible women who are blazing trails and changing the game in state legislatures across the country. Make sure you’re following all of these heroic women. THREAD!
Under the leadership of Virginia’s first woman & first Jewish Speaker @EFillerCorn, Democrats have repealed medically-unnecessary anti-abortion laws, combatted workplace harassment, banned pregnancy discrimination, and ratified the Equal Rights Amendment.
@EFillerCorn At 28, @MariManoogian is the youngest woman serving in the Michigan House, where she’s fought for clean drinking water & public schools. She’s the great-granddaughter of refugees & the first Armenian-American woman to serve in the state legislature.

When Emilia Sykes became an Ohio legislator, she had trouble getting in the statehouse. Security often searched & questioned her while white lobbyists & aides walked in freely. One day she asked the officer why he wouldn’t let her in. “You don’t look like a state legislator.”

Sykes always knew representation matters. Growing up as a dancer, she saw the diverse bodies of the Alvin Ailey troupe, letting her know she could grace the stage too. But in the portraits lining the halls of Ohio's statehouse, it was clear white men had long held that space.
2/7
But now, as the House minority leader of the most diverse Democratic caucus in Ohio history, Sykes is leading the agenda, helping pass more bills in her first year than were passed in the previous two sessions combined.

People of color are dying at a higher rate from COVID. #BlackLivesMatter is putting police violence center stage. Black owned businesses are struggling. @SpeakerAJones, the first woman & first Black Speaker of the Maryland House, knows this is the moment for a Black Agenda.
1/8
@SpeakerAJones Jones served in the Maryland House for 20+ years before assuming the speakership. During that time, she also worked as a civil servant in Baltimore government, the county where she was born & raised. Her no-nonsense approach to legislating made her a leader among colleagues.
2/8
@SpeakerAJones Since she became speaker in April of 2019, Jones has pushed for increased funding for HBCUs & the repeal of legislation that has shielded police officers from accountability. She’s been a champion for education funding, especially prioritizing school construction.

In the post Civil War era of Reconstruction, some 2,000 Black men served in public office, 600+ in state legislatures. While the number of Black leaders was far from representative of the Black population, their elections were nonetheless a testament to Black organizing power
1/7 Image
After the union declared victory in 1865, the Black community organized Equal Rights Leagues, protested discrimination, & demanded suffrage. Following the ratification of the 14th & 15th amendments, Union League branches encouraged Black political activism across the south.
2/7
The newly elected legislators during this period came from a range of backgrounds. Many had been born into slavery, like Alabama’s Jeremiah Haralson & Florida’s Charles Pearce. Others, like Arkansas’ William Henry Grey & Georgia’s Tunis Campbell, were born free.
