THREAD: In a deeply sad way, I'm glad I discovered the gut-punch of a headline this morning bc TBH I wouldn't have been able to sleep. My heart breaks for the people killed and their families.

*And this happened on the same day @StopAAPIHate came out with new numbers showing the *reported cases of anti-Asian hate over more than a year of this pandemic. It's nearly 3800 cases y'all from March 2020 to February 2021.

While we don't yet know the motive behind this particular incident, know that anti-Asian hate is real. It's happening. It's been happening. @nguyen_amanda has an IG video you can check out that brought the issue to light nationally recently.

The issue is nuanced. We live in a country that has grouped us together based on the color of our skin, yet, there are many cultures and groups of people who fall under the wide umbrella of "Asian American." I'm Hmong. IDK what it's like to grow up Japanese or Chinese.

And our educational systems, for the most part, have historically failed in teaching children the history of Asians in this country and how intertwined that history is with other groups. @teachntransform has more to say on that.

@CAALMN and it's partners have been a resource for conversation, understanding around this topic for Minnesotans. @aaja has given guidance to journalists and organizations about how to move ahead covering and addressing the issue.

@NBCNews @VickyNguyenTV recently did an hour long piece about the Racism Virus. @weijia has been asking the questions in the White House for AAPI all around the country. For anyone who has gotten this far, please list other resources for people who want to learn more.
