I am sick. I am irate.

My dad messaged me this morning to tell me a driver was yelling at every Asian parent at the bus stop, including him, to get out of America, or they’ll be killed. Killed.

He was dropping off his grandson in East Saint Paul near Lake Phalen. The woman yelled at him first and then proceeded to drive by all the other Asian guardians waiting with their children to get out or be killed.

He’s confused. He feels unsafe. He’s angry. He’s hurt. He doesn’t know if there’s justice for the emotional trauma that driver wreaked. He doesn’t know if she’ll come back and do more or worse harm.

My dad fought as an SGU soldier during the Secret War on the side of the U.S. This country is as much his as anyone else’s.

It pains me to have to end my conversations by telling him to be careful or safe when he’s going outside.

UPDATE: For those asking if we reported it, we did this morning. Both to the MN Dept. of Human Rights hotline and the Saint Paul Police Department. I don’t think I should have to address or justify this but here I go.

I did not post the license plate because we don’t know if this is the person’s car or it was borrowed or taken without permission. With that in mind, I don’t think it serves anyone to take matters into their own hands.

We have reached out to the appropriate agencies and I hope they will handle it with care. I am also having more conversations with other leaders.

We can’t fight racism with vitriolic action, otherwise, are we just like them?
