While we await more information about the recent fatal shootings of 8 people, 6 of whom were Asian women, in GA, we know enough about the chilling effect the killings have had on Asians in American, especially in light of the recent surge in violence against them. #velshi
2/12
None of this is new. Anti-Asian racism has a long and troubling history, including the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 - a law specifically designed to prevent Chinese American laborers from entering the country. #velshi
3/12
To this day it’s the only law ever passed to prevent all members of a specific ethnic or national group from immigrating here. Scapegoating Asian Americans for public health issues is not new, either. #velshi
4/12
Which is why on the many occasions the former President of the United States engaged in it, when referring to covid-19 with derogatory names. It cut so deeply in the Asian American community. And it paved the way for his supporters to follow suit. #velshi

For the rest of us, who were not part of the problem, we now have a chance to be part of the solution. President Biden has already said the right things, and that is good. Laws can change, executive orders can be enacted, and they will help. #velshi
6/12
Some companies in cities with large Asian American populations have offered to donate to causes and community solutions like increased police presence or volunteer patrols, which is great. Ultimately, though, we need to fix the underlying problem. #velshi

One thing I personally have learned a lot about in the wake of #metoo & the social justice movements of the last year, is how to be a better ally. I didn’t really know what that word meant in this context a few years ago but when I learned it really resonated #velshi #BLM
8/12
As someone with some power, privilege & voice, I use that actively to demonstrate to those who might be frightened, unsure or unsafe that I am prepared to learn the issue, offer my understanding, extend my support, encouragement & if necessary, my protection. #velshi
9/12
Being an ally means finding out what those in need, need from you right now. They may need nothing more from you than to hear that you stand beside them in this fight, or to be asked what you can do to help them feel safe. #velshi
10/12
For you it may mean attending a demonstration or supporting a community group. In my case, I can tell the stories of my Asian American sisters and brothers on TV, and bear witness to their reality. #velshi
11/12
The point is there are so many ways to be an ally to a friend, a co-worker or a neighbor whom you may not even know is hurting right now. #velshi

MLK Jr. said “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” It sums up the power of each of us in this moment in which we find ourselves. There is a rip in our nation’ s fabric right now, there for all to see. It can only be mended by us. #velshi

There’s a special relationship between a shark and a pilot fish. On the surface it appears friendly, but it’s better described as “mutualistic,” where each species benefits from the relationship. #velshi
2/11
In this case, the pilot fish gets protection against predators while feeding off fragments of food in the shark’s teeth which, in turn, helps the shark avoid potentially deadly parasites. An unlikely pairing - a Pilot Fish and a shark - but together they work. #velshi
3/11
That seems to be the best analogy for the relationship between Lindsey Graham and Donald Trump. And if it wasn’t already clear - Trump is the shark and Graham is the pilot fish in this scenario. #velshi

Let me tell you a story, that is based in the truth.
They say they’re cancelling a doctor. Cancelling Dr. Seuss!

How these rumors began should not fill you with shocks.
As you can probably imagine, many started on Fox.

The REAL story is this, so gather round and take note:
Dr. Seuss wasn’t cancelled for something he wrote.

Theodore Geisel was Seuss’ real name.
But since creating his works, the world sure has changed.

Those who manage his legacy have taken a look.
And to preserve his integrity, they’ve deleted some books.

You see, in the 30’s and 40’s, and for decades thereafter,
Stereotypes were common, and often brought laughter.

I want to tell you a story about a place far away and its people about whom you probably don’t know much, but who are suffering. #velshi

Xinjiang is China’s largest region by size. It borders Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Russia, Mongolia, and the former majority Muslim states of the Soviet Union. #velshi
3/13
Of the 25 million people who live in Xinjiang, about 11 million are Turkic, as opposed to the Han Chinese who are the overwhelming majority in China. They are known as Uighurs. #velshi

"The events in Birmingham & elsewhere have so increased the cries for equality that no city or state or legislative body can prudently choose to ignore them. It is a time to act, in Congress, in State & local legislative bodies & above all, in all of our daily lives"

That was President Kennedy in a speech to the American people on June 11, 1963. It was considered a watershed moment in the Civil Rights movement and marked the beginning of the end of a long struggle for equal rights. #velshi

Protesters began to pressure Birmingham’s business leaders to open employment to people of all races, and end segregation in public institutions, stores, schools, and restaurants. #velshi

On Thursday the Biden administration, along with congressional Democrats, unveiled a new immigration bill creating a path of 8 years to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the country. #velshi
2/11
The bill also provides an expedited path for DREAMERS - the undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children by their parents. #velshi
3/11
The bill’s approval has a tough road ahead given razor thin Democratic majorities in both houses, but while there’s little bipartisan support for immigration reform in Washington, DC, there’s broad support for what it aims to do among Americans. #velshi

A couple is two people, a minyan is ten, a jury is twelve - so what do you call eleven people? #velshi

Well in the case of the 11 House Republicans who joined the 219 democrats in voting to remove Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committees assignments, you call it a good start … but with a very big caveat. #velshi
3/13
The House of Representatives resolution punishing Greene was barely more than a page long. House rules require Members of Congress to “reflect credibly” on the chamber, and pointed to Greene being removed for quote “conduct she has exhibited.” #velshi
