Good: AstraZeneca vaccine has 79% efficacy in new trial in US, Peru, and Chile. 100% efficacy for severe #COVID19. Good safety profile.

WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER: if US approved the vaccine back in Dec 2020, like UK 🇬🇧. Could have saved more lives. nytimes.com/2021/03/22/bus…
2) Dr @VincentRK is right again, we should not have waited for an “American trial” before approving something if clinical trial evidence already showed it was 60-90% efficacious back in December.

Lives have been lost by this “American trial first” approach.
3) AstraZeneca is now FINALLY filing for EUA with the FDA.

It hadn’t done so for all these months yet in the Us!!!
4) Why did AstraZeneca not seek EUA from the FDA back in December? Because they screwed up relationships with the Trump FDA. It was quite a mess—but the science was still sound. But they didn’t get the tacit go ahead to submit for approval. And lives lost. nytimes.com/2020/12/08/bus…
5) Also critical - no blood clot risks found.

2) Brazil’s population is roughly 2/3 of the US. Thus, if adjusting Brazil’s 3251 deaths today to a US sized population, this would be equivalent to ~4800 deaths if Brazil had US pop.

3) Don’t look away. The world needs to face the reality of the crisis facing the people of Brazil, and the crushing effects of the #P1 variant, which is also now circulating worldwide as well as neighboring countries. This could all be us if we don’t collectively act.
