Like, my dad, god love him, instilled that in me first thing. “I have just checked to see if the gun is loaded. You watched me. I hand you the gun. What is the first thing you do?”

Poor Dad, he was so excited I wanted to learn and so terrified that all the dudes in American Gun Culture would drive me off before he got a chance to share his enthusiasm with me.
He also once told me that if I ever felt like switching careers, a female gunsmith could clean up on all the women who do not want to be “little lady’d,” but I think I’ll stick to writing.
And honestly? I still don’t like guns. I am never going to be comfortable around them. But, much like chainsaws, it is probably best that I’m NOT comfortable. I am much too careless when I am comfortable. I prefer to always feel like I am carrying a sleeping rattlesnake.
