#DayOfReflection I treated hundreds of Covid patients in the last 12mo. I was the named consultant for 184 who died, equals to 16.2% of all Covid deaths in my Trust
I remember my colleagues from different specialties who volunteered to work with me on the pop-up EoL Covid ward, providing top class palliative care. At that time little was known about Covid, but it didn’t stop us from doing our best. That’s professionalism & bravery.
I remember many did not have prior palliative background but we up-skilled quickly. That’s adaptability. @NUHEOLC@HcopTeam
I remember the little nice touches that my team added to every single room for the dying Covid patients. That’s attention to detail. @PlummiexD@pinkstone_sarah
I remember the unilateral decision made by my 2 registrars @ArnottRosie to work alternate weekends in order to ensure every dying Covid patients on my ward was reviewed daily. That’s commitment and maturity.
I remember a HCA wearing v basic #PPE, comforting a Covid patient in a side room who would otherwise be dying alone in the absence of his family. That’s care at the highest level & humanity.
I remember holding my smartphone, pointing at a dying Covid patient, so that his daughter could say her goodbye via WhatsApp videocall. That’s improvisation. And we cried together afterwards.
I remember the many elderly couples who contracted Covid and deteriorated together. I remember the effort made by us to put them together side by side in a double room. That’s love.
I remember the many colleagues who fell ill to Covid, and how apologetic they were for not able to help out in the hospital. That’s sense of duty. @HcopTeam@teamtraumaNUH@NUH_AcuteMed
I remember the jubilation upon hearing the result of #RECOVERYtrial that Dexamethasone helps to reduce mortality. That’s hope.
I remember the 3 months of self segregation at home, not hugging my family, in order to protect them. The loneliness of eating in bedroom alone. That’s sacrifice.
I remember every bit of everything about Covid in the past one year. I remember this is my calling.
#COVID19 is more than real. But together we will beat it
