Scenes on College Green Bristol about 15 mins ago for another protest against the Police & Crime Bill.
This time by van-dwellers, travellers & Gypsies, who say their way of life would effectively be criminalised by changes to law included in the bill #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
Those protesting had set up camp and appeared set to try to stay overnight on College Green. Don’t think the police are going to let that happen
Police horses move towards College Green, Bristol. The police operation to break up this protest camp is underway #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Police horses and police dogs wait just around the corner
Stand off, or rather sit off, in progress. Protesters sitting in road near College Green Bristol, faced by line of riot police with dogs & horses behind #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Protesters - & there are around 50 of them maybe - are sitting chanting 'ten years for protest, five years for rape' at a line of riot police facing them
It's a reference to the sentencing priorities of the Bill #KillTheBill#BristolProtest

This was how the protest camp on College Green, Bristol was cleared a while ago. Those evicted moved on to Deanery Road nearby and are currently sitting down in the road faced by riot police, horses and police dogs #KillTheBill#BristolProtests
This was the protest camp that was broken up by police in riot gear, forcing most of those who were taking part in the protest out & down Deanery Road, where they are now staging a sit-down protest #BristolProtests#KillTheBill

The sit down protest continues.

They were chanting 'ten years for a statue five years for rape' earlier, about the Police & Crime Bill. Disappointing no one has turned this into a chant yet tbh
Video here from an earlier confrontation at Bristol College Green when a #KillTheBill protest camp was broken up.
A protester sitting on the floor is dragged back by his hair by a police officer in riot gear as others are forced back #BristolProtests
Tweeted a video earlier of when the police moved in on the protest camp on College Green, Bristol. Here's what happened immediately after that.
The shrine around the tree is for Sarah Everard & has been there for a week or more #KillTheBill#BristolProtests
The video of the sitting protester being pulled by their hair backwards by a police officer in riot gear is understood to have happened in the middle of the above operation
Here's video number 3, of the earlier police operation to clear the #GRT College Green Bristol protest camp.
Follows on from two above.
Protesters sat down & were forcibly removed by riot police #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
As part of that same operation, here's a video taken by someone who describes how police officers in riot gear were trampling through the memorial shrine for Sarah Everard on College Green, Bristol #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
Here's more footage, following on, from when police move in on the #GRT protest camp in Bristol tonight
This happened earlier & is part of thread above.
Riot police pull up people sitting & lying down on College Green #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
It's important to give a bit of context here.
The Police & Crime Bill has parts that curtail traditional ways of life of Gypsy Roma & Traveller communities, & also people who just live in vans.
Bristol has A LOT of those - high rents & housing crisis #KillTheBill#BristolProtests
A striking image of the #GRT protest camp on College Green Bristol in between the 2nd & 3rd waves of police operation to clear #KillTheBill protesters who were camped in tents/sitting down #BristolProtests
Back to now... Protesters are now lying down in the road and the line of riot police has advanced very close to them.
Arrests have begun. Police are taking the protesters away one by one
Some protesters are lying down on their backs side by side and have linked arms. This may prove a bit trickier for the police officers to arrest them one by one.
To recap, police in Bristol tonight:
Forcibly broke up a #KillTheBill protest camp
Tore down tents
Trampled over the memorial to Sarah Everard
Dragged man by his hair
Pushed a group of sitting protesters chanting 'peaceful protest' off College Green w riot shields, dogs & horses
The police probably outnumbered the protesters. both around 200-strong.
The protest was in breach of coronavirus lockdown legislation.
The protest finally ended tonight when riot police charged over the prone protesters on Deanery Road, & then with horses, chased the remaining protesters & media all the way down to Anchor Road, warning them they had to disperse.
Here is the Avon and Somerset police statement about tonight's events
Tweeted late last night of the final charge from police & horses over the protesters lying on the road of Deanery Lane, Bristol in the early hours of last night. Here it is on video #BristolProtests#KillTheBill bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…

THREAD: Three areas of South Bristol have the highest coronavirus case rates in the Bristol area
Hengrove 950 (cases per 100,000 pop.)
Knowle West 942
Bishopsworth 859
according to today's latest case number figures.
Number of actual people who tested positive for covid between Mon Dec 28 & Sun Jan 3:
Hengrove 86 (it was 23 the week before)
Knowle West 71 (12)
Bishopsworth 51 (14)
Total from just those 3 areas: 208.
Some of those 208 people will be fine
Many will be ill ('a week-long worst flu of my life' a friend of mine described it as)
Maybe 10 or 20 will need a hospital
But statistically, maybe 2 or 3 will die
Could be more? 3, 4, 5? Could be 1 or we'll be lucky & say none.
But avg is 2
BREAKING: The number of people who tested positive for covid-19 in Knowle West, Bristol, has jumped by 1067% in a week. That's not a typo...
Throughout December, 6 people a week tested positive in Knowle West, roughly. Pretty low.
In the 7 days to Sat Jan 2, 70 (SEVENTY) did
I don't know if track & trace & @C_A_Gray will be able to tell us why cases have increased tenfold in the week after Christmas.
If track & trace worked at all, it would do.
But it doesn't.
Anyone in Knowle West any ideas? Massive Christmas party? A nursing home outbreak?
These are last week's cases.
The effects on hospital numbers will be felt in the coming days. Already, we're at record levels of people hospitalised & fighting to breathe in Bristol's hospitals.
This is not a hoax bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
THREAD:
BREAKING: @aspolice have launched a major appeal, with CCTV pics, to find the 18 people responsible for how the Edward #ColstonStatue into the docks
Full story here - please read first - but this thread will examine how we got here... #Bristol bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
It took 83 mins from toppling to dunking & the police didn’t intervene once
Afterwards, the mayor & others praised police for their restraint - no one was injured & nothing else was damaged- compare that to scenes elsewhere #Colston#Bristol#ColstonStatue bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
The question soon arose tho - should those responsible face a police investigation/poss prosecution?
The morning after, it was a Q the mayor said was not for him - he said he was not going to be a ‘cheerleader’ for a prosecution, & it was for the criminal justice system, not him
It's now being rolled towards the floating harbour.
Colston opened up the transatlantic slave trade to Bristol merchants & around 20,000 people, incl 8,000 children, died on his ships before they even reached the Americas.
Bristol became Britain's leading slave trading port.
People quickly leapt on the statue as it fell.
Worth noting that the tall office block behind in this picture is 'Colston Tower', & it's on Colston Avenue with the (soon to be renamed) Colston Hall concert venue beyond. #Bristol #BlackLivesMatterUK#bristoltaketheknee
THREAD: I was back in the Stroud Subscription Rooms for the first time in years today & had a flashback to a moment there that’ll stay with me forever, involving the legendary Cider With Rosie author, Laurie Lee.
1/22 #CiderWithRosie
I have so many stories about Laurie, it was an honour to know him, albeit in his final years.
But this one I’ll share now.
Perhaps memory & time has given it extra dramatic flourish in my mind. Perhaps there are others there who will remember better too.
2/22 #CiderWithRosie
It was, I think, 1996 & his beloved Slad was under threat from housing developers, who wanted to expand Stroud into his green & beautiful valley.
