“As Boko Haram continue their relentless cycle of killings, abductions and looting, they are also subjecting women and girls to rape and other sexual violence during their attacks. These atrocities are war crimes” - @livingtruely #SGBV amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
In Feb & March 2021, @amnesty interviewed 22 people in a cluster of villages in northern Borno State that Boko Haram has repeatedly attacked since late 2019. Women & girls frequently targeted with rape & other sexual violence
The targeted communities have been abandoned by the forces that are supposed to protect them, and are struggling to gain any recognition or response to the horrors they’ve suffered. The Nigerian authorities must urgently address this issue.
Survivors and witnesses described attacks involving sexual violence in at least five villages in the Magumeri local government area of Borno State. During raids, usually at night, Boko Haram fighters raped women and girls who were caught at home or trying to flee.
No survivors @amnesty interviewed appear to have accessed formal health services. Stigma and fear of repercussions mean such incidents are significantly underreported. At least one of the survivors continues to suffer health complications some months later.
Access to abortion is illegal in Nigeria, except when life is at risk, which means survivors of rape do not have access to safe and legal abortion. #SGBV
The conflict in northeast Nigeria has created a humanitarian crisis, with more than 2,000,000 people now displaced. Boko Haram has also frequently targeted aid workers trying to respond to the crisis.
.@amnesty has repeatedly documented crimes under intl law and other serious violations in northeast Nigeria, including against:

➡️children amnesty.org/en/documents/A…
➡️& older people amnesty.org/en/documents/a…
The @IntlCrimCourt must immediately open a full investigation into the atrocities committed by all sides, and ensure those responsible are held accountable, including for crimes against women and girls. /End 🧵amnesty.org/en/latest/news…

Last month @amnesty revealed a horrific massacre (a potential crime against humanity) & alleged war crimes in Axum.

State-aligned @EthioHRC went there (Amnesty was blocked from doing so) & corroborated a massacre took place.

UN-led investigation now!

"[The] # of civilian fatalities & other casualties cited in this preliminary finding report are not final and only represent those the Commission was able to
verify at this stage of the investigation."

@amnesty has the names of 240+ victims. There are likely more. #AxumMassacre
"Residents also say 'The injuries of the five people who died on the spot was such that it was impossible to identify them before they were buried.'"

That was from strikes outside Axum on 18 November, before the #AxumMassacre even took place.

BREAKING: @amnesty reveals shocking new evidence that Nigerian military razed villages & forced hundreds of inhabitants on trucks before burning their homes to the ground. The fight against #BokoHaram should not be like this. Civilians must be protected. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
@amnesty #Nigeria's military burned and forcibly displaced entire villages in response to a recent escalation in attacks by the armed group Boko Haram in Borno State. @amnesty interviewed 12 displaced villagers & analysed satellite imagery corroborating their testimonies.
@amnesty Witnesses described the military raid on 3-4 January. Villagers were rounded up & forced to board military trucks that whisked them away to an IDP camp as their homes & were torched. "We saw our houses go into flames. We all started crying" one older woman said. 400+ displaced.
